All Small Six 200 valve springs

This relates to all small sixes
I don’t know how relevant this will be for the OP. But I haven’t seen anyone mention PAC Racing. They have a good tool for figuring their spring pressures. And I believe they make their own springs.
A word of caution on spring selection, remember retainer thickness is not the same between manufacturers. If you measure your spring height with an oem retainer and get retainers from Comp or whoever, the installed height will change. I had to return my standard locs and get a set of +.050 to compensate for the retainer thickness. I ended going with a beehive spring, it was all I could find. It is a pain finding springs!! PAC was good to work with, once I got the direct phone number of a guy, he was helpful 👍

PAC may be responsive to customers in the US, if you try to reach them from outside the US via phone/email/their hompage contact form, the will ignore you completely...

I had to buy the PAC locs via summit racing.

I understand, that’s why I mentioned getting a direct number. I had to be persistent cuz there spring was the only on I found to meet the specs I needed. I think they busy enough they need more phone help.

How do these old threads keep getting brought back up? If the original poster didn't figure it out 2 years ago, I don't think they are still looking for an answer. There was another thread from like 9 years ago with recently posted suggestions to.

My guess someone is searching a topic, finds what they are looking for, adds a post and doesn’t look at the date.

I was guilty of the same thing when new to the forum. Both old threads were re-fired by new members. Not really a problem- I'm learning much about the small6!

No problem! I will look those up tomorrow and post them. I do know I had to use honeycomb springs to get the right pressures needed. It was a pain, the right inside diameter, installed height with proper open and closed pressures. I will post the specs 👍

Ok, I used the following:
Springs: PAC series 1200, part #PAC-1286 Ovate wire beehive. Spring rate: 283
Outside diameter:1.405, Inside diameter: 1.00
Small end:
Inside diameter: 0.650
Installed height 1.750 @125lbs
Spring open height 1.150 @295 lbs

Retainer chrome moly steel: part# PAC-R363

I ended up using #PAC-L8149 valve locks with +.050. The reason is the installed height was measured with a different retainer and the installed height changed, the +.050 corrected that.
Let me know if you have any questions and hope it helps😎

Don is the installed height at 1.750 a typo, seem tall for stock valves?

Looking back it might be 1.70. They were over sized valves, I don’t know about the length, they are just what came with the head. Stainless steel valves. 🤔

Don,
Did you have to do any machine work on the spring pockets to get the beehive springs to fit?
If not, this is a great, cheap upgrade.

I don’t think there was. I bought the head completed, 2 bbl conversion done. I don’t think he would change the pockets if he didn’t have to

Just to be clear, I didn’t have any work done to the pockets. I don’t know for sure if any was done before got it. I just don’t think the guy I bought it from would have done anything to the pockets, he just sold it with valves installed. I think I have both the ID and OD of the pocket of you want. I do know the springs fit well, very little movement in the pocket👍
