223 Rear Sump Oil Pan?

I have heard somewhere about some 223's having a rear sump pan. Is this urban legend, or did they? If so, how hard would it be to find?

I have a 223 for my 55 Ford pickup which has a rear sump. I don't know if this truck was produced with this. It could be from a F250 or F350., or even a 262.

Additional Information. You will have to use a truck oil pump as the pickup tube bolts to the plate on the bottom of the pump not on the side.

So the front sump oil pan is not the original pan for a truck?

My '63 F100 came with a front/mid sump design. Not really a true front sump, but the deepest part seemed to be right over the front axle. Exactly where I didn't want/need it.

My 62 F100 also has the 'mid' sump pan. It has recently come to my attention that there are different depth's of the 'mid' sump pan, which I did not realize before.

Hey Fred,
What are the differences in height and when were the changes made? I thought there were only two basic designs- the mid sump for trucks and the "flat rear" sump for cars. Didn't even realize the early trucks had a rear sump, but I guess that makes sense since they moved the oil pump/dizzy location forward a bit on the later models.

I thought all the 'mid' sump pans were the same. Sold and shipped one to a guy over in Texas. When he got it, he said there was a difference in depth of the sump and that it would not clear his pump and pickup. Did not go any deeper into the matter, so I don't know how much difference there is. I don't know what engine he had, other than a 'mid' sump 223 and I don't know what the engine the pan I sent to him came from as it was already out of any vehicle just laying on it's side on the ground with no vehicle close by.

Didn't the 52 and 53 cars with the 215 have a rear sump?
I have heard of people putting a 302 into the 52's and 53's and they needed a truck 302 with a rear sump to fit. So I'm gussing the 215 would have been a rear sump?
