77 & 81 head

Had a few days off last week, spent them all at the local pull-a-part. Gotta a great sunburn too. Anyhow, I found 3 cars with what looked like workable heads I got two of them. I believe one of them is an undesireable that Scheljdahl lists in the performance six handbook it is an E0BE-6090-BB, the other is a D7BE-6090-BA or AB something like that. I know the first one is not the best choice, but it was cheap...$30,,so I pulled it as well. It has an extra hole in the log toward the front that is tapped and held some kind of vacuum distribution spickit or something. I think I will cut this log off just to look in there. The other, I plan on trying some of that stuff Doug did on his setup. Before I went to pull these I called a guy here, and he wanted $500.00 for a completely rebuilt 250 head and for the core he wanted $100.00. He thinks a lot of his work I guess, I told him I would spend a few hours in the sun and pull a couple of rebuildable heads....Also got the Duraspark distributors out of both, I hope I got all the necessary wires, but probably didnt, cause I can't tell nothing about where one begins and the others end. Would like some advice on the heads, you know the possiblities, where to start, how much I'm in for regarding machine work....I hope it isn't $500, if it is Im getting a V8.

hey darwin...is the place called pull-a-part...cause thats pretty funny since we got a place here called pick-a-part....prices for heads are about the same too....i believe the first one u mention with the tapped hole in the front is similar to mine...if the tapped hole is on the side of the log and not the top then what goes there is a thing that has 2 or 3 vacuum ports as well as a screw inable part to that piece for the brake booster....u gonna practice porting and polishing of that first head too...that would be sweet...if u dont want to use the first head then i would practice the grinding and all that on it so u know what to do on the second head....i would also mock up a custom intake on the first one....for the second one that u wanna use i would take it in to get in magnafluxed and then mod it up since u have experiece with the first one....thats along the lines of what i'm gonna do some time in the future...

Sounds like a good days work!! The EO head would be the best pick for a build up IMO....The tapped hole in the front is for one of them vacuum trees (like you indicated) and is a lot more user freindly to hook up vacuum devices then the older heads.

I have my pcv valve, tranny modulator line and water injection vacuum line hooked up to mine.

There should be a pad to the side of the intake log that used to be where the egr valve hooked up. Just cover that up with a gasket and a piece of strap steel.

You can get some ideas from my website on how to modify the head.

Thanks for the input, I looked at your site again after the Slayers comment Doug and I saw that you had the first head as a build up, so I might try that too. I had talked to a guy down here in OK who was/is apparently a fairly good drag racer, Tom Conway...Anyway a friend gave me his name and number regarding the small six as a performance engine and I told him about some of the work I have seen on this forum... He gave me another name of a guy here in OK City that use to do a lot of these heads, had a co. called Whitehouse Automotive...To make a long story short, I guess he is no longer with us...So you and those on this forum are my source of great six info...Love your site, also just went to the Slayers site...it's pretty cool too, he could paint that Monarch like the Green Hornet and Kato's car. Anyway, Tom told me the only real problem they had with the sixes, was that the cranks threw their lobes...never heard of that...not the rods, pistons....but those weighty lobes...I'm not looking to drag race, but I would like this thing to pull 14's in the 1/4mi. and still be streetable...do any of you think that is possible?

hey darwin...if u can get me some pics of the Green Hornet and Katos car...i just might pait it if i like it...i'm working on the body right now and hope to paint it within the next month or 2...a 14 sec streetable inline is totaly doable...check out the hrdcore tech section for a thread called 'tubocharged falcon 1/4 mile times' or something like that...its under a 14 sec turbocharged 200....pretty sweet...also depends what your car weighs...id be happy to get into the 15's or 16's but i want naturally aspirated...my beast weighs 3250 lbs according to the manual..but the GVWR written on the doo says its over 6,000 lbs...so whatever that means...i think its 3250 though...i've never heard of a inline losing anything on the bottom end of the engine actually...once u upgrade the valvetrain and pistons the thing is a brick sh!t house...at least thats my understanding..i could be wrong...

Sorry, Slayer...don't have a pic! if i did it would have to come from one of the old comic books and that in itself would probably be worth some cash. Anyway, it looked like that Monarch front end...you know like one of the big four door Lincolns back when they opened like suicide doors...pretty cool though in fact I think Kato moonlighted as the Hornets chauffer "guess that's spelt right?" when he wasn't kicking some poor crooks butt... In regard to the head..,, I've run into some pretty outspoken jerks when asking about helping me machine the head...One guy was just outright rude "You ford guys can't recognize a POS when it's staring you in the face, get something that was made for building and save your money....." Really, man the guy was irate.. Tom was nice though..He just said that was beyond his machine work expertise and referred me on.....But I'm finding that a lot of people feel like I'm wasting my time and their's and get down right mad about it. I'm not a great mechanic, but my dad was pretty damn good and he told me... any decent built six with the right workup can blow most stock V8's and some pretty decent built ones right off the pavement. I always thought he was a little weird, but since finding this site I think he may be right. Maybe some one has a pic of the Hornet and Kato's machine and will post it...

Sweet....cant wait to see the movie...but man darwin...just reading what those guys said to u makes me feel like running over there and bashing his head in with the head...kinda ironic actually...but i really cant believe some people...i have an extremely well running engine...even in my massive car i can give my pals probe with a 2litre a good run...and thats stock...ive done a few things since then...he's really starting to hate his probe...he paid almost 9 grand for it....and it sucks....I've put about 3 grand into my car...not so visible...but when the bodywork is done and its painted it'll be sweet...and when i get the engine worked on enough to get some decent power inceases...man....my bud with the probe says when i beat his probe with my tank hes gonna drive his car off a cliff  ...some people just need to be shown that a six is worth rebuilding...but if i ever run into an @$$hole like that i certainly would do my best to prove him wrong...ba$tards...aaargh...

Nothing, those guys can say will dissuade me, I just consider the source, but it does surprise me how freaked out they get over the idea of building a ford six.....I think it's the log head thing....I have to admit, I'll never understand why Ford did it that way...My Dad never owned anything but a Ford and his whole family bought nothing but Ford. Both He and his brother were superb diesel mechanics as well and could tear'em down and rebuild them in their sleep...I was an oddball...everyone else is making big bucks building, rebuilding, boosting and charging those things while I spent 10 years in college getting a doctorate. But I loved watching and working with those guys they are still bigger than life to me..My dad took a 56 f-100 and put a flat-head 292 in it that would simply scream...but looked like an old rusty red farm truck. Look at the post just beneath...the 200 drag stang,, that guy is just incredible in my book.....The reason those V8 folks get so worried is because of guys like him and others on this forum. Heck, lets have an I6 REVOLUTION!!!!!
