will any other car's a/c fit on our mustangs?

I want a/c but the $1000 is prohibitive...

there has to be a cheaper way.....

Go pull the guts from a Fairmont. Get a new receiver/drier, though. Then get it charged with the new freon. It's not hard, and the brackets will probably fit fine. The Fairmont A/C pump sits on the passenger side of the engine. Get the right-angle adapter that goes into the side of the block for the heater hose when you pull the pump: it's right under the pump. Otherwise your heater hose won't have a way into the block when the A/C compressor is mounted.

That won't take care of the evaporator inside the car. Unless you want to do a very expensive conversion, the only good way to handle the evaporator is with an underdash unit.

$1000 is a little high for a generic underdash unit. $600-700 is closer to reality, plus the cost of charging and any custom brackets you might need.

plus installation...I am kinda weary about doing taht whole thing myself...

has anyone here put in an aftermarket a/c system? who do you reccomend for parts?

The Fairmont from 1978-1979 has very compact units. The evaporator in the car is narrower than the glovebox. It's mounted under the glovebox, on the passenger side. I don't know where the condensor mounts could attach to the Mustang, but the unit is only 1" thick, so it's easy to fit. It's quite wide, too.

This evaporator unit also contains the heater core and fan. It's been a while since I looked at a Mustang floor, but it seems that there is more space in the Mustang than the Fairmont. At worst case, I can see having to punch a couple of holes for the hoses, but I would replace the Mustang heater at the same time.
