does anyone use one of these kits? and if so which one, and what is your opinion on it? summers almost here in texas, and ill be needing an a/c if i ever get the 'stang runnin. i remember someone posted a link to a site with a kit around $900, if anyone has that, please post it. also, would any performace be lost when the a/c is turned off, or only while its running? thanks guys, can always count on yall for answers.

i have seen vintage air and classic air...

I think that even if you dont run it...the drag of the belts steals power...

I am thinking like you...since I am in Miami..A?C so the wife will ride with me

Other than more weight, the A/C does not affect performance when off. The compressor has a magnetic clutch the free wheels when the system is off. So I guess there is a very small HP loss associated with spinnning the freewheeling cluctch.

You can expect to have to raise your idle speed to handle the compressor. I have the original style York/Tecumshe compressor, and it tends to bog down the engine at idle. I have read that the rotary aftermarket compressors consume less horsepower and cool better. If I remember correctly, it seems that the old compressors use about 5 HP and the new compressors about half that.

8) doug, the old style compressors absorbed more like 30hp   , the new ones use only 10-15hp. as for after market a/c, i like vintage air.

Jon let me customize mine for less than I could find it anywhere else and I really looked around. I think I have about $650 -$700 in it. Ask him about what I'm running and he can suggest that or something different if you like.

how well does this system work?
you like it? got pics of the setup?

rbohm, I assume you are kidding about the compressor using 30 HP. If that were true, it would feel like a turbo kicking in everytime the compressor cycled. That comprssor frame could not handle a 30 hp load. About the only time it would absorb 30 hp is if the compressor had locked up. Then something is going to give, most likely the belt, which is I doubt is rated at 30 hp especially factoring in the shock loads of the compressor clutch cycling.

The actual numbers are closer to 9-12 for York and Tecumsa(Sp?) compressors. This is about the most you can transmit through a standard v-belt setup. In fact, many older setups used dual belts to keep it from squealing. Newer sanden style swashplate compressors are smoother and will comsume about 5-7 hp. This of course depends on the head pressure, which changes with temprature, so exact figures are impossible without more perameters. There are very good chats on the sanden website somewhere.

Air Conditioning!?!?!?!? Pshhhhhht, roll the windows down, open the vents and use the gas pedal to control the flow  I wouldnt mind air conditioning, but Im doin all I can to gain power. Plus Ive never had it before (this is my first car) and I enjoy having the windows down alot now, lol, no matter what Im driving.

lol.

thats what I tell my wife...turn on the a/c...and then I ask her to put it on high...the vent windows

lol, I forgot the little vent window things, those are NEVER closed on my car. You can tell my stang because its the one with the drivers side window ALWAYS cracked if not all the way down, even in the rain and the vent windows open. We once drove on the interstate in POURING rain with both windows down and our arms out, didnt get too wet until the freakin traffic jam. Blew peoples minds tho, I love it. Windows down, arm out, thats the way it goes down for me

Wife = A/C.
Priority number one. Then paint, and a good sound system. Engine, transmission......what?

I have a Sanden 508 and a homemade copy of theadapter plate. The york/tecu unit draws a lot of hp, around 12-14. Mine was noisy, old, inefficient, and whenever I turned the A/C on, the sudden drag was very noticable. The Sanden is quiet, about half the weight, and draw about 5 hp when on. I still notice it, but not nearly as much.
I have a big universal condenser and an OEM underdash unit. Works great, wife is happy.

I'm using classic air out of florida I believe. It cools eveen in the hottest of Houston's weather. I also put on the air vent clear shield when it's intollerable and that keeps any extra hot air leaking in. It took about 6 hours to install but everything was there. As aLways I had a few bolts left over.

If ppl are interested in a/c-

We should get a group buy together. In other forums, we've got stuff much cheaper when there is 5-10 ppl.

I've got a spare new sanden in my garage=) Maybe I can get a kit minus the compressor(?).
