Air filter clearance problem.

I just put a new hood on my 67 Mustang. The problem? The 5200, adaptor, and stock 74 Pinto air filter assembly are too tall. It worked ok with my old hood, but the old hood was a little tweaked. It hits the support frame on the hood sligtly and I'm not gonna cut into my new hood plus I really dont like the usual solution on small round open air filter up top. I was thinking, what if I used a air filter box like the one on my 92 Ranger? Sure, I'd have to fabricate an enclosure for the carb, make sure that it was air tight to the pipe from the filter box. I could even add some ducting to bring in fresh air to the filter box, and put everything on the drivers side to avoid the exhaust altogether. The plastic or pvc (if I have to make it myself) would help keep out the heat from the engine. Would there be any problem created by having the filter that far from the carb? What do you guys think? Anyone got any other ideas?

Sounds as if it would work, give it a try see what you come up with, your not going to damage anything trying it so why not.
