looking for a back up carb and stuff from autozone and checker's and they aren't making it,,, they all run like garbage,,, all carbs as you know are striped off junkyard engines,, any ideas

trust me you will never find a decent carb from any retailer like autozone or discount. You can get one and do your own rebuild job to make it right but i have seen it to where they screwed up the actual carb by forcing in needles and jets that didnt belong. However if youwant to upgrade to a 2bbl holley, autolite or carter you would need an adapter from clifford or stovebolt and a different dizzy because the stock load-o-maic will not work with a newer carb it will only work with an 1100. You can go with an 1101 and still use your stock dizzy however you would need a spacer plate because the carb has a bigger bore. What id did when i was faced with your problem is i went to ebay and got a carter rbs flows 215cfm about 30 more than the 1100 from a 71 250 rebuilt for 50 bucks since the bore is bigger than the 66 head you can do like i did an go to your local metal shop and get a 1/2 inch aluminium spacer cut the hole for the carb and drill the holes for the head. I thought about doing the 2bbl setup and while it would give me more power the carb linkage and kickdown for an automatic has to be changed and the orientation of the carb to the radiator can sometimes be a challene.

The RBS is a good carb to go to if you want to stay with a 1bbl. I have one on mine and it runs good.

the spacer on the head may work i'm not sure because i didnt want to bore out the spacer hole for the rbs besides the 1/2 inch aluminum plate was much easier bause the metal shop pucnhed out the hole and cut it to size for 20 bucks so it wasnt worth it to me ruining a 60 dollar spacer. However if you want to stay with the 1bbl and it sounds like you do you simply cant beat the rbs it is a simple carb to tune and it has the set it and forget it mentality it also has an isolated fuel bowl and 1 piece frame that means there are no possible leaks from the body of the carb itself and if it ever needs to be rtebuilt simply remove the fuel bowl and all the compenents are there so ther is no complex disassembly of the carb.
