I want to be able to shut my alternator off when I race to get every last HP I can out of my motor :D

I know there is a wire you put a on/off switch in but I forgot which wire coming off the alternator it was.....Maybe the field wire?

This has been talked about before but I dont have the time this morning to look it up

Thnaks,

Doug

I believe it is the field wire you disconnect.

Are you also running a race battery (something small/light that will take repeated cycling)?

and is it a 16V battery? don't forget your voltage will drop from about 14 to 12-11 without an alternator. This can be an issue with spark.

Problem is, most electronic ignition systems function best at 13.5-15 volts. The battery will only give you 12V. You may be losing some efficiency there in order to gain a couple of horses from the alternator.

If you really want to make the most of it, rebelt it for races bypassing the alt altogether.

Yup. And wire up a DeWalt® 18v battery from your cordless drill for a temporary ignition source. It would work plenty long enough for a day of drag racing. Remove the car battery to save weight.

Dang....forgot about the voltage drop, the DUI distro probably wouldnt like that to much... :? :(

Plan B is a underdrive pulley for the alternator. I'm running the dual belt later model waterpump that has the smaller water pump pulley.

I have the early larger single belt water pump pulley and a new early water pump in the shop.

Anyone running a early model water pump with a single belt with Mikes 2 belt performance balancer? Curious if the dual belt harmonic balancer will line up with the single belt water pump & alternator pulley without tearing it all apart and trying it out myself?

Thanks,

Doug

GM HEI will work reliably down to about 9v.

You should have no problem running off the stock battery for a pass down the strip.

You can drive for literally hours on battery alone. I think I drove my Ranchero for the first week with no Alt and my exide bluetop deep cycle.
