Another Newbie Question

I am attempting my first restore of a 1967 Ford Mustang with a 200cid I6. With advice from several on this forum, I tore down the engine and sent it off to a reputable machine shop. Found out the engine had been previously rebuilt, but the 40 over bore was way off.

I just got my 200 cid engine back from the machine shop. It is now bored 60 over – line bored – maganfluxed, new cam, crank, bearings pistons, rings, piston rods. The head was reworked with new valves, springs etc.

I would like to reassemble the engine myself so that I can learn something, but I do not want to screw up the $1500+ worth of machine work and new parts I have acquired.

Wondering if there is a step by step guide to rebuilding a an I6 Engine, including all the little nuggets of information like 3/8 rubber hose on Piston Rod bolts before inserting into Block, where to use Engine Honey versus Assembly Lube, etc.

I already bought the book Ford Falcon SIX Cylinder PERFORMANCE HANDBOOK, and it really has a lot of great inforamtion. It does not really tell me how to rebuild the engine as much how to make modifications.

a shop manual would help, and if you can't find that then find a Chilton's manual (not a Haynes, they don't have the I6) and it'll give you the step-by-step

as for the little tips and tricks like the rubber hose... you might go to Barnes & Noble and look through their self-help section, find the automotive books and see if they have one that has general tricks, for the most little tricks like the rubber hose will work on any engine
it's the principles you want, so it doesn't matter if it's for a chebby small block, or a pinto, as long as it's a pushrod, piston you'll be fine
check along the way, and if you get two conflicting things, go with the Chiltons
 
I second the shop manual. The real bonofide Ford Service shop manual is a bit pricy, but it's much better than the Chilton's.
 
Shop manual sure is great, but of course it is "factory original". It is a great book, and you'll get correct torques for bolts etc out of it. As a practical engine rebuild book I have found a vee-eight book loaded with good info about an engine rebuild in general:

"Tom Monroe: How to rebuild small-block Ford engines"

Yes, it is a SBF book. It goes thru the process from tear-down to inspection to assembly with a load of tips and tricks all the way, those rubber hose things and others. Adapt that practice to your I-6 with engine spesific info from the shop manual and you are done.
 
Thank you Evan, WhitePony and 80stang for your feedback. I broke out the Chilton books last night (I have a couple different versions for the Mustang) and started reading again.

I will start looking for a Shop Manual. Someone else also recommended a book produced by Clymer.

Best thing is to read and ask questions. Your questions are the most important, becasue if you don't know the answers, we will help out, or find someone who will. Strike up a friendship, and slowly feed your self with information. We don't care how many times the same question is asked. We'll maybee I do, but heck, we all learn by asking what we think are dumb a$$ questions, and the moderators here are tasked with helping you out in a cheerfull manner.

Searches don't always work well becasue computer system sometimes fall over. We've been very fortunate. We have a member list, and every post made can be found by the user. If you find information from one user source you like, chances are they have other posts. I post a lot because I have verbla diahorea, but franky have found that the guys posting more than 7 posts a day or less than one post day are able to help out like real experts. Any problem can get sorted with this kind of depth.
