Any info on this ignition?

You can get the armature. Here is a pic of one for a '78 and later DSII:

Yours looks different, though. Your local parts place should be able to order one for you.

That dont quite look like the ds2 thing to me. I have never seen anything like it. My GUESS is that the black box is some sort of magnet or sender and that little nub that you can see in some of the pics is the pickup or reciever. That would make sense to me because the black thing is wide and the little nub thing is attached to the vac advance and is oppsite the black thing. The little thing could move with the advance but the other side of the spider thing would still be inline with the black thing.

Anyone know for sure or have a better theory?

I would keep it for the museum, too rare and strange to trust.

No, the black thing is just a grommet that the wires run through. There is a post that the spider runs over and creates the firing I guess, that's why they are cut-out the way they are. Here's some pics of it.

Seller has agreed to take it back, maybe I'll do that. I do have a new Petronix that I haven't installed yet, that woud probably be the better option.

I have an old general car repair instruction book that has pictures showing this to be a proximity sensor type of triggering unit.

"Proximity sensor is used on Prestolite and Motorcraft replacement kits. An external control box sends an oscillating current to the sensor rod, creating an electromagnetic field. When a tooth on the nonconductive trigger wheel shrouds the metal rod, the magnetic field is damped. This changes the current in the sensor rod wiring and triggers the transistor in the control box."

Then there is a drawing that looks almost exactly like your photos. I have no other info.

Looks like Joe has the answer. Darn I was looking for a magic black box too bad its just a gromit for the wire. Sounds like it is just an early version of the current magnetic pickup. I wouldnt count on the control box being compatible with other systems so maybe it will be best to get your money back. With that broken part is only good for a 5 cyl with a miss. I see in one of the pics on the controler it was made by WELLS who still makes aftermarket ignition parts, So I may be right that it was an early retrofit kit. IMHO they are the bottom quality and price parts and have been for the 20 years I have been working on cars. At a local Fleet & Farm store they are the brand that has the $12 GM hei module and $16 Ford DS2 module.

If the seller will take it back because it was broken, I think you have found your way out. It was probably pulled because it was broken anyway.

I think it will be tough to find that unique reluctor, and based on your pictures I can say that is EXACTLY what my Comet had in it- mine failed right where the wires go into into that little pickup area, they were shorting internally. And the control box it uses is definitely not the same as a Duraspark box.

A Duraspark or Pertronics would be a much more mainstream way to go, offer better performance, and have much better parts availability. At least now you can get your money back to go that route.

Yea, I think I sending it back. Went to NAPA and couldn't find the reluctor in any of the catalogs, I can't think of anything else to try so I will send it back. Thanks for the help guys.
