Back at the engine build

Well, as you can tell, I took the summer off from working on the Mustang. We spend as much time as we could up in Strawberry and had a blast.

However, I've been itching to get the car running again and it is finally cool enough to get back to work.

I did get my Aussie head rebuilt and it is ready to drop on to a fresh short block.

At this point, I've got most of the accessories removed from the engine/engine bay. Tomorrow, a buddy is coming over and we will pull the 200 out of the Mustang.

I've got a bunch of new decisions to make about the short block, as well as some decisions regarding the head and intake.

I haven't decided on a machine shop yet, so recommendations would be helpful. I'm in Gilbert, AZ. While I've used Basko in the past, and really like their work, I feel like I'm paying for more than I'm getting so I'd like to try someplace else.

I'll definitely have the block cleaned and components balanced. I'll bore as little as possible - I'm not going for a huge hp improvement as this will be a daily driver. I'm expecting to get plenty of performance improvements just from putting on the Aussie head and 2bbl carb.

Looking forward to getting "re-engaged" here on this website.

Got the motor pulled. Here are a couple of shots.

Way cool! Nothing like working on an old car with your kids, huh?

Those are the best pics when you have your boys there to help.

Or girls:

This is the one who rebuilt the suspension on the Stang. The boys were too busy with computers or something else just as stooopid.

It's definitely fun having the kids involved. One is grabbing baggies and writing the name of the parts I'm storing like "flex plate bolts" while the other is taking the parts from my hands and putting them in the baggies.

It's also fun knowing that, when I head out to the garage to work, the boys are telling their Mom - "we want to go help Dad!".

Its amazing to hear the questions they ask about the entire process. :D

Yeah. There's a lot of that low key wisdom that you can pass on too. And just talk. And then when you are done, if you did it right, it work better too. And if it doesn't they see how you deal with frustration. Sometimes it's even constructive.
