Backfire and shaking--timing related?

I agree, if you puny Human can cause some play in a U-joint just imagine how much play the engine can cause.

Also check that none of the spring clip ujoint retainers have come out.

When installing a new U-joint with a grease fitting make sure that the dirrection of rotation will tend to close the hole not open it up. I.E. the grease fitting hole should be lagging the differential yoke not leading it when the engine is driving the car forward.

Wait, what spring plates am I inspecting in the rear? I'm not sure what part that is.

The spider has 4 arms; only two of those have retaining clips, right? The front one has the other 2 pressed in, and the rear one has the other 2 retained by tiny u-bolts? I ask this because I distinctly recall seeing some spider "arms" without clips. They looked to be pressed in.

69.5Mav, I'm not sure that I follow. Are you saying that the grease fitting should be on the side of the spider that faces towards the rear of the car?
