not sure what the deal is. my alternator belt started flying off last week.

i put it back on and tighten it up, but when i start it up the belt rolls itself

inside out. if i really get on it the belt just flies off. now the power steering

pump belt started flying off too.. :? any ideas

just the alternator, and both belts. but its been about 4 months since i changed it. and i dorve it all the way to oklahoma from north carolina with no problems.

Sounds like you might have a bent pulley?

Had this problem on my 93 Capri, about every 3 to 4 months it would throw the alternator belt.

Turns out the alternator pulley was bent, a common problem for this model alternator.

Im guessing you bought a rebuilt alternator? See about getting a new alternator or a new pulley?

the alternator was new. from what i can see the pulley is straight. its also throwing the power steering belt now also. they only get thrown off when i rev the motor up high rpm.

check the double pulley, in my expierience belts rolling or flying off have been because of pulley alighnment , bent or loose pulleys

Just throwing out another thought. Make sure the belt is the proper width for the pulley. An make sure the pulleys are all the same width to accept the same belts size.

While I was inspecting things I would also take a close look at the crank pulley/balancer for play.

I was just thinkijng similarly. Put a torque wrench on the Crakshaft Pulley Bolt, and make sure the pulley hasn't worked its way out. You could even have lost the bolt!

I happened to be doing some light reading on belts today and looked at the troubleshooting guide in the manual. Belts that roll over or fly off can be caused by loose belts, worn pulley's, misalignment, debris in the grooves, incorrect placement of the idler pulley, and severe vibration and or load shocks. Another thing they mentioned was the breakage of the tensile cords in the belt. This can occur if the belt is installled improperly by forcing it over pulleys rather than having enough slack during belt adjustments to lay the belt on it and then pulling tension into the belt.

well i think i finnally got it fixed. im not sure how but things got out of

alignment. i got them lined back up pretty good but the alternator belt was

still popping off. i borrowed one out of my buddies truck and it works fine.

i guess mine got rolloed inside out one too many times.

 crazy old fords
