Big cubes in a small six block

They were doing fat bored sixes back in Aussie in the late 50's, early 60's with Hoden engines, adding sleaves with 0.5" thick plates on top of the block to create engines up to 30% bigger, boring out the entire cylinder wall, and screwing in 3/16 liners.

Intersting you mention the Holden engines, because of late I have had an inckling to rekindle my youth and grab a 186 redmotor to see what I can get out of it with parts avialable today.

One of the annoying problems with wet sleeve liners is they move when put under the pump, resulting in incessant head gasket failure. To overcome this, dowels come in handy.

What about them? There's plenty of Jap petrol engines that run wet liners ...., but start to increase the ponies significantly and they need help to maintain integrity.

one way to overcome the liners moving is to have the liners basicly sit on top of the block on a near polished surface (if rough they wear through it and drop and result in head gasket failure).
also have a steel shim gasket like a headgasket but sits on the block surface
then have a steel plate that is 4/5thou thinner then the linears and is a tight fit when at operating temp ie interferance fit when at 90deg
then have you head gasket on this with the combustion rings on the linears
this gives you a 4/5 thou squish on the combustion ring to head and a much better seal for the combustion chambers.
that is the way cat do it on there big boost big hp engines and it works better then just a gasket on a block with the linears flush with the block
