They were doing fat bored sixes back in Aussie in the late 50's, early 60's with Hoden engines, adding sleaves with 0.5" thick plates on top of the block to create engines up to 30% bigger, boring out the entire cylinder wall, and screwing in 3/16 liners.

Intersting you mention the Holden engines, because of late I have had an inckling to rekindle my youth and grab a 186 redmotor to see what I can get out of it with parts avialable today.
One of the annoying problems with wet sleeve liners is they move when put under the pump, resulting in incessant head gasket failure. To overcome this, dowels come in handy.
