Boat update, we put the new engine in on the weekend

Sweet then, thanks for the tips vaughano and jamyers. I won't worry about it then.
I'm so excited! Tomorrow my new exhaust manifold arrives and then... drumroll... the conversion from 250 2v (complete with a "ventilated" block) to crossflow is COMPLETE!!!
 
That's a Ford casting reworked by Y/T. I don't know if they ever used virginal stock, or if they were all used to begin with. Certainly not in consideration now. The exterior colour is (sometimes) a guide to the type of head it is. A more modern yellow painted head is a "Street Performance" unit. Once they were all yellow, though - depends how ancient this unit is!

It may not have hardened seats. That is about the biggest caveat.

Factory iron head with 40 mm intake ports by Dyno Dave Bennett. Descripton is wrong.

Yellow Terra Head-suit 4.1L Ford XW? - cast iron engine, crossflow. This item is full reconditioned (never been used since reco)- ready to fit.


It was in fact the available from 1978 to 1983 for the XC/XD, and TE Cortina , F100 and Transit trucks. YT had two types. The 35 mm XD head, and the preferable XC casting which wasn't great in stock form, but certainly was after Daves CNC Mazark had given it a good going over.

It's on every page of the 1980 to 1982 Yella Teera adds run in Wheels Magazines.
 
80 to 82 in the wheels mag? Jeez i was born half way through that.
Okay well i might pass up the opportunity, if its nothing special.

News update: the new exhaust is bolted to the block, looking VERY nice :)

 
Another problem:
I had to remove a 3/8" BSP coolant fitting from my engine head, but it was corroded and broke off in there.
I went to gasweld and asked for a 3/8" tap and a suitable drill - they wanted $20 for the tap and $40 for the drill !!!

Does anyone have any better / cheaper way to solve this problem? Currently my best option is looking like getting a suitable bolt and some (lots of) gasket sealant.
 
Sure it wan't an NPT fitting? Drills get expensive over 13mm. The taps are dear - it's just how things are.

If you're game and have a ball-nosed parallel carbide bit for the die grinder, you could munch the insides down to the thread just showing. Then flick up a corner of the "wire" thus formed and twist with pliers, wrapping it on itself, over the pliers' nose. When there's enough real estate, start the tap.

I've got 1/8" NPT but that's all. (It's the vacuum port size on precrossflow manifolds, both motor brands.)
 
Yeah its probably NPT. I just bought BSP brass plugs, is all.

Those alloy fittings are a right PITA!

Not for me. I've found that the time lost with "mates" negates any time saved. :wink: Plus, if I buy them, they are in the toolbox every hour of every day.

Screw it. I'll just get a suitably big bolt, and glue it in with sealant.

Geez - i just got a quote for an exhaust pipe to go from the manifold to the exhaust outlet. $280 for a piece of bendy pipe thats 1 metre long??? Frigging hell...

And i'm off to buy an impeller today for the waterpump. So this weekend we should be in business.
 
Its saturday night - i'm stuffed!
Well... all went well! The engine has a new impeller, a new exhaust, and lots of other little things done. All the coolant (river water) hoses are hooked up, going in this order:
River -> Water-cooled Sump -> Filter -> Water pump -> Water cooled Exhaust -> In Engine at timing end -> Out the head at the flywheel end -> Out the exhaust

I ended up making the exhaust from copper plumbing pipe, soldered together with a propane torch. Should do the job for a while until i can afford something proper.
I also plugged up that pesky hole in the head! Ended up just using sealant, a big bolt, and a hammer.

I hope you're not all getting the impression this is being held together with sticky tape!!!

Its looking sweet now i've cleaned all the tools out of the boat and given it a cleanup...

Still to go: set the timing, finish the exhaust, and modifying the engine cover. Possibly get a 350 holley and manifold to match. And take it to the river!!!

Theres heaps of info on boat motors in these threads and its great to see it coming to completion and getting wet. :D
Personally i love the fact you got an inline boat and that the crossflow is happening like it belongs, these motors a fantastic hey......

You're right - it's fascinating how everything fits exactly in. The only problem so far with the swap from pre to crossflow is that i'll have to make a new engine cover!
 
Bit of an update - its been a while.
Its all looking good. Some wiring needs to be re-done, i need a new ignition switch and temperature sender -somehow i broke it!
Still haven't taken it to the river - this last weekend was the bridge 2 bridge which was annoying... but soon it'll be out there carving up the butter...
