Hi all,

My brand new MSD 6A died on the way home from work last night. With the key on I have 12 volts of power to the red wire on the MSD but no power to the coil. I'm running a Duraspark II with the MSD alone. Coasting to a red light and it quit. I wired it up per the MSD guide as a magnetic trigger (red wire). It worked perfectly for a month or so then bam no spark. I checked power and ground to the box and that was good. All of my connections were tight. Has anyone ever had a MSD just quit on them before? Summit said to ship it back and they would ship another one out.

I had an MSD tach adapter overheat and fail on me. But not my MSD-6A yet.

Summit is good about returns.

No, but double check all your wires and make sure they are tight. I had that happen before.

Summit is really good about that stuff, that's why I recommend buying things from them. You'll have no problems with them getting you a new one in a timely manner and with minimal hassle.

I can't say enough good things about Summit Racing. They are a very reputable company. I remember back in the early 90's being stationed at Ramstein Germany and ordering a set of Crane Fireball cylinder heads. Well, I thought it was a pair. I remember asking the salesman if the price listed was each or for a pair. He assured me it was for a pair. I only received one cylinder head, which I refused at the post office, since I ordered a pair. I talked with their customer service about the mistake. They apologized for their mistake, refunded my money, and paid for my long distance phone calls from Germany. I have and will be a customer of theirs for a long time. They didn't get upset with me, raise their voices, hassel me or anything. I am still a trusting customer and have purchased thousands of dollars of merchandise from them over the years.

Yeah, they really are an example of how to do business right. But on top of that, usually their prices are the lowest or within a few bucks. I even once ordered teh wrong thing, got it and realized it was wrong. Called them up, all I had to pay for was return shipping of the part back to them and they sent the other on the way.

Anything I can order from them, I do.

PS, sorry to hijack the thread.

I have an msd with btm on my lightning that went bad .I took it to my local speed shop and they sent it out for repair -msd fixed it for free but I had to pay for shipping. This seems like a common problem, also my friend had one go bad . I never had a problem after that.

If the box has a ground connection, check it well, when installing the new one. Its power consumption is in Watts - calculated as W= 12V × Nominal Amps.

So - if you have a resistance in either the positive lead or your ground, the voltage is reduced. As power demand is still the same, the current draw increases in attempt to compensate - you can burn stuff out with a bad ground.

Regards, Adam.

Thanks for the info guys. Adam I had it grounded at the voltage regulator. It was showing a good ground there. I have replace the sheetmetal screws with a rivnuts and bolts with lock washers to hold the voltage regulator on. I was having a problem with the voltage regulator being grounded before I did that.

This time when I wire up the new box I think I'll carry the ground wire around to the block where the battery grounds.

Thanks again for the info and the support.
