Actually it starts, runs, idles just fine, but when I drive it down the road a little while after it shifts into second (ford-o-matic) it starts to stutter really bad. Imagine that "vroom" means its running and "errr" means its dead, my car sounds like this "vrooooooom...err...vroooom...errrrr...vrooom....errrrr" etc, it eventually gets slower and slower until it finally totally dies. It does this even if I drop it into low instead of drive after it happens. Its done this everytime I take it for a drive, I've changed the fuel pump, plugs, done a tune-up, cleaned the carb, put all kinds of beneficial fluids (like Restore and crap) down it's gullet and nothing seems to matter, although after getting a tune up and replacing the fuel filter it ran good for longer than usual but it started again anyway. Could it be the trans? Bad accelerator pump on the carb? It's just puzzling that it starts and idles great, and I can sit there and rev the piss out of it no problem, but take it down the road and it sh*ts. Its driving me mad. :x Oh, it's a 62 comet with a 69 200 ci in it from God knows where.

What throttle position are you at when it happens? Probably not an accelerator pump, or it would fall on its face starting out from a dead stop. If you are in the throttle pretty good when it happens, it could be a plugged or restricted main jet.

Also check the distributor advance, if it runs fine under no load, but craps out when under a load, the problem may lie in the distributor....

Thanks for the suggestions. As for what throttle position I'm at I would say regular cruising position. When it starts happening though, if I jam on it it gets worse, it will only run somewhat if I keep my foot as little on the gas a possible, but it keeps losing speed slowly until it just stops. Could it be the fuel filter even though I can rev it all I want when I'm at rest? As for the dizzy, should I advance or retard? I don't have a timing light so I guess I'll just bring it to the closest shop. It doesn't exactly happen under load though, 'cause from a standstill I can gun it and it takes off pretty good. It seems to only happen after it has shifted into second.

If you can take off hard, that definitely eliminates tha accelerator pump, and if it doesn't act up at full throttle in first gear, that would eliminate my main jet theory. If you're driving an older car, you really need to have a timing light. You don't need an expensive one. I dont think this is your problem, but heres a funny story....Know a guy who had a 68 Ford F100, used to act up on him at the most inopportune times. The guy replaced every imaginable part, including a complete engine and trans rebuild. No one could ever figure out what made this truck run so badly, but only occasionally. After about three years of searching........A grease rag was found in the bottom of the gas tank. When conditions allowed it, the rag would plug the fuel pickup for a few seconds, and the thing would run like shite, then quit altogether. a few minutes later, it would start and run great. The point is, never forget to look for off-the-wall shit. Many older cars have been bastardized in one way or the other over the years, and you never know what you might find.
