carb and distributor

I just starting to add on to a 200 block and head and was wondering what distributor and carb I should go with to get the most power. This is not a racer but I would like the engine to experience a decent jump in HP over my stock and old 170.
I am planning a header.it is a 1968 block with a early 80's head which have had a rebuild(not confirmed with papers).
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks

I dont want to get into a carb debate but as for the dizzy... go DUI if you have the money and dont care about having GM parts on your ford. The only bad thing I have ever herd about DUI is the cost. Everyone I know of that has had one said it worked right out of the box with no tinkering needed, they build them for what you are running. Its also the cleanest setup since the coil and module are in/under the cap so there is only one wire becides the 6 spark wires. If you have an issue with the GM parts then the DS2 with your choice of modules is the next best way to go. They have seperate module and coil which could be good or bad depending on what you think of wires and clutter. There was a thread here somewhere about someone thinking of making a performance version of the DS2 but I dont remember the details.

DUI is NOT GM, it is an aftermarket peice. Davis Unified Ignition yes it works off the concept of the GM Hei but there are diffrences. a DSII dizzy fired with a MSD 6A box would do the same, a little cheaper, but the DUI is a nice compact, 1 peice unit.

Ok, it may not be made by AC Delco but I just wanted to warn the guy that its looks 93.27% like a GM distributor on the outside. Id hate to have him find out at a show when someone points out to him that it looks like a chebby. Im all for the best value and what ever works to make cars fun to drive and for the most part I dont care who made it as long as it does what I want it to do. However there are people out there that would not want anything on their Ford that looks even slightly like a GM or Mopar part no matter how much better it may be.

Like I said earlier the DUI's are well built quality units, nothing like the 'offshore' reman stuff you can get at a parts store but like everything quality costs more.

Steve I ran a duraspark one setup in my 66 that I sold. Bought the dizzy rebuilt off ebay for 15 bucks. Went to autozone for a cap and rotor and ran an MSD-6A I picked up for 60 bucks. you wont notice a difference between the DS1 and 2 if you run it off the MSD. this is a very reliable setup and depending on your search skills can cost you less then 200 bucks.

Carb is a tuff subject, I hit on a couple points when you were down here.

Here is my comparison of DS2 and Pertronix Ignitor 1:

http://www.kastang.net/pertvds2.html

I've not tested the new DUI that is around, but for the money, unless you are going for insane power, it can be pricey compared to DS2 or Pertronix. I personally wouldn't go for DUI until you are pushing over 160 RWHP and want to pull every last ounce out of the 200. From what I've seen, the DUI is around a 5% increase over the DS2 HP. It basically comes down to how much money is the HP worth?

The other thing to consider is how you drive the car. I know DUI is a quality product, but given that things can still break, do you want to be stuck waiting for parts (but since you previously mentioned weekend driver, it may not be a problem) or do you want to be able to drive down to the nearest NAPA/Autozone/Pep Boys and get any parts you need. DS2 offers over the counter comfort, but a little less performance. I daily drive my car so I need the comfort of being able to get any parts I need quickly.

I agree with what Slade is saying about cost vs. gains, thats why I went DS2 with an Hei module. Got a Dizzy at a junkyard (turned out to be shot) so I had to get a rebuilt one from a parts store but I came out ahead because of the core charge and that I got the cap adaptor for free. I had the HEI module in the garage so it was the most bang for the buck for me. Cap, rotor, module, and coils for the DUI's are available in stock at any parts store. They even say that on their website (check it out they have some cool oddball stuff www.performancedistributors.com ). The coil and module you could buy isnt the same and may not be the same performance as thiers but if you are just looking for a fast way to get back on the road they will plug in and work.

Have you read the stuff here:

He gives you some good basic info on ignition systems.
