so im sitting in the left hand turn lane on the bussiest intersection in the city when the car dies, i start it again, and it immediatly dies again, so and and so on... so i push it across 4 lanes of trafic to the Taco Bell parking lot to try to figgure out what the happened;

Near as i can see the jet is not working on the carb, i can get the engine to run if i pump the accelerator and engege the accelerator pump, but otherwise the engine isnt getting any fuel. i have now rebuilt it 4 times in the parking lot and finaly got it to run (not well but it runs) and drug my sorry ass home.

any idea of the cause? im thinking i am just going to replace the carb, it is almost 40.

REPLACE THE CARB

I noticed a big improvement (at first)

I am sure my problem wont happen to everyone

Simple things first; don't forget to check your fuel filter and fuel pump before condemning the carb. After all, the gas tank is almost 40 also, and may have filled the system with rust and dirt...the bumps like to shake little clumps free sometimes.

Howdy Travis:

Was there fuel in the bowl when you did the parking lot rebuild? If not work backwards toward the pump and tank to find the plug. If there was, look for a blockage in the jet, channels to the venturi booster or the booster itself.

If there were no symptoms prior to the stall, then it's likely that a piece of crud caused/is causing a blockage.

These early one barrel carbs are incredibly robust. All they really need is clean fuel, air and a careful rebuild about every three years to keep them ticking. And there is no guarentee that a new/rebuilt carb will work as it should.

A rebuild is an easy DIY as long as you take your time and follow the directions in the rebuild kit. Be sure to add new filters when you do a rebuild too. And, Clean, clean, CLEAN!

Dave,

I am interested in the DIY carb rebuild for my 66 coupe. Any definitive manuals on this for both Autolite 1100 and the Carter .?

yea it had feuel in the float bowl when i pulled it;

i narrowed it down to a mess of passageways that lead to or from (whichever) the idle screw, something in there seems to be blocking either a vacume passageway or a gas inlet/outlet. Getting the carb rebuilt as we speak profesionaly, as i rebuilt it my self 5 times and got it to work for about 15 minuits 2X before the same thing happened.
