Carb swap or other options?

I have a 1968 Mustang that idles rough frequently. It currently has a Weber 38 DGES that the previous owner swapped on there (using a 1V/2V adaptor the head is not milled) and I was wondering if I should swap out the carburetor? I know my 200 isn't really modified, I think the only thing that isn't stock would be the pertronix ignition and the Weber so I believe the the engine is over carbed. I heard the DSII and DUI help but I wonder it would really make a difference in my situation.

- So is the carb worth keeping? I dont really plan on modifying my engine much in the near future so it might be too much carb for my engine.

- Can I upgrade other parts so it idles and runs smoother? Distributor etc?

- Or should I just swap out the carb? What are peoples opinions on the Pony Carbs Vaporizer is it worth the price?

Thanks,
Anthony

The Weber 38 DGES does not have a Spark Control Valve (SCV), whereas the Load-O-Matic distributor on your 6 needs one. So to smooth out the idling/running, you'll need to either swap distributors, back to an Autolite 1100, or to the Vaporizer 1100 from Pony Carbs, which has fantastic reviews.

I would suggest, since you have already have the Weber carburetor, find yourself a Duraspark II distributor (70s electronic ignition distributor which does not require an SCV), and hook that up. It is a very easy swap, and can be done for about $100. You might be able to sell your Pertronix and make your money back on it, to boot!

Here's a couple of links that should help:

Good luck!

Didn't Ford switch from the LOM to a vacuum advance distributor by 68?

I agree with mysavioreigns, find a Duraspark distributor.

8) yep.

my advice is to tune the system rather than just replace the carb. you might find poor mixture adjustments, bad plugs, plug wires, points, etc. you might even find a vacuum leak. if after going through the systems and making sure that they are all up to par, then consider replacing the carb

Howdy Anthony:

Is your car/engine a Calif/Emissions engine? Either way, a '68 will not have a Load-O-Matic distributor. It will have a distributor with both vacuum and centrifugal advance, so the mismatch between your Weber and the distributor is not much of an issue. Just make sure the vacuum hose from the distributor is connected to a ported vacuum source on the carb. Is your car an auto trans?

In general, the Weber is a very good upgrade, especially for '68 & '69 200s, which got a downsized version of the Autolite 1100. IIWIYS, I'd keep the Weber and give it a good tune-up, including the ignition. It should give you a better idle, better mpg and better performance, over an 1100. They usually require some fine tuning when used on our engines.

Although not necessary, the upgrade to a DuraSpark II ignition is a good one.

Adios, David

If you were considering the expense of the Vaporizer you might be able to get your Weber direct mounted for about the same money.

x2 (but if you did I recomend finding a 78 - 82 hex log head as it's more gain on 69+ heads)
the vaporizor (and probably any 1100) is good for 95 HP, ask me how I know...

Thanks for everyone's advice  I think I'm going to do a tune up and check for any the leaks and such. If I do go with a new distributor I think I'm going to go with the DUI over the DSII.

CZLN6 - My car does have a Automatic transmission does that make any difference?

bmbm40 - I was interested in the Vaporizer because I wouldn't have to modify the log but I couldn't find it anywhere, I went to Mustangs and Fast Fords OC a local parts and service shop that specializes in classic mustangs and older fords here in Santa Ana ( great people ) and we put in a order for one back in December and I'm still waiting :? so I decided to look at different options.

I'll put up a post after I do the tune up and check for vac leaks
