I have a '65 Mustang with the 200 6 cyl. I'm planning an engine rebuild later but was thinking about changing the carb now. Is a Pony carb a good way to go or is there an option just as good?

Thanks,
Mark

Howdy Back Mark:

The Pony carb is an excellent way to go for an otherwise stock engine. If you choose to go that route, add a Petronix Ignitor to your distributor, bump up your initial advance by 5 degrees and enjoy the new life.

The only downside to a Pony carb is the initial expense. If that's all you plan to do for intake, in the future, it may be worth it to you. If you plan to upgrade to a two barrel or later one barrel you will need to upgrade your stock Load-o-Matic distributor too, as it will not be compatible with a newer carb that does not have a Spark Control Valve in it, to send the proper vacuum signal to the distributor.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Thanks David. I plan to do a slightly improved rebuild but nothing radical. I like the idea of keeping it as "original" as possible.

Would there be a later one-barrel you would recommend? Will the original air cleaner fit on it or should I change to something that allows for more air intake anyway? And lastly, if I use a later one barrel, which distributor would you suggest? I have already added the Petronix Ignitor.

I don't want to change too much form the original olook but would like a little better performance.
