Cater YF carbs

Hey guys, newby here.

I want to replace the Carter YF that came with the Mustang 200ci six that is now in my 62 Econoline. At the very least I want to rebuild it. My question is, did the YF come in different bore sizes? I see it was used on motors as big as 300ci. is the 300ci version different from the 200ci version?

I want to stick with the Carter because it seems so much simpler than the Autolite, or Weber-Carter for Motorcraft carbs I also have sitting on my shelf here for the same engine family.

The current carb seems to run well, but it idles rough and seems to miss-fire a little while driving.

One last thing, I know the distibutor has mech and vacuum advance, but I have no idea what it cameout of. Does anyone have a good part number for a basic vacuum advance canaster? Or at least an application? It' got to be small. The Mustang 2 line advance can that was on this motor has limited adjustment before it hits the doghouse on this van.

Try one from a 240 L6, it came off of a F-100 pickup. This is what I have had on the 200 L6 for over a year and love the extra cfm's plus responce of the engine. Just bolt on, set the air/fuel mixture screws, then the idle and go. It looks like the others, so there is your core when you trade them in...OOPs my bad, trading in the wrong carb for another, shame on me!

I have checked my plugs for color, and all the same tan to light brown.

ps. vacuum adv. Borg-Warner V155 or V134, it is the dual adv/retrd, but it will put you on the right track. Watch out for the linkages from the VA to the base plate, they come in different configurations.

I had the dual chamber advance, but it was too big. The doghouse in an econoline van is pretty tight. The big can will hit the wall of the doghouse and make it hard, maybe impossible, to get the distributor into the motor. I was having a hard time getting the motor into the van because of it, so I swapped for the distributor that was in the old motor. I just don't know anything about this distibutor. Well, I do know it has the mechanical advance, but otherwise nothing.

Where does the vacuum advance connect to on the Carter Carb? or should it be connected to manifold vacuum?

No, you don't want to hook it to the manifold vacuum. The port side is what you want, it should be close to the bottom by the choke side of the carb. When running you should not feel any vacuum from that port (and remember always disconnect the vacuum and plug when setting the timing on a engine).
Tell the auto parts house to get out their book, Borg-Warner, and look thru it, they should have both dual and single advance units. The singles being smaller, in your case, is what you are looking for. Can you not reset the distributor (you know put the engine on TDC take the dist. out and replace it back in turning the vacuum adv. away from any obstructions)?

I could probably take out the distibutor and do that, yes. But I'd rather not. I know, that's just being stuborn and all. The engine compartment in the van is really tight. The dual chamber one I had was hitting the wall, when I tried getting the engine back in. I suspect it might fit, now that the engine is in there, but I'd wouldn't have much room to adjust the timing.

I think I have it hooked to the right port. If I remember correctly, there was only one on my carb. Here's a good link, though its the later electronic equipt version:
