Choke Tube Ideas?

Hello everyone...

I recently installed an 1100 carb on a 170. The new carb does better on the idle, but the 1100 has an automatic choke, unlike the previous 1908 carb.

I have seen the choke tubes listed in many parts catalogs for about $15. The pictures I have seen show the end of the tube mounting up to the automatic choke housing and then down to the exhaust manifold into a small port there. The manifold I have does not have any port or crevice.

Does anyone have any experience making and mounting their own tubes? If so, what materials did you use and how did you mount it?

Thanks ahead for helping!

Happy New Year hamandbacon,

Sounds like you have the original manifold
for a factory hand choke application. There may
not be alot you can do short of getting a choke tube
kit and somehow fasten it to the side of your manifold.
Maybe with a hose clamp? That is what I did when I put the
header on my '61. I actually used 3/16" steel brake line
and bought a ferrule and compression nut from the parts store.
A kit would have been less work .

Also, I know this isn't the classifieds but I have a '68 manifold
complete with tube if interested. It, however accepts a 2"
exhaust as opposed to your 1-3/4"(?)

You can get a heat collector and tube with insulation at a speed shop. Collector looks like a little bitty quonset hut. You secure it with a hose clamp and run the tube to the choke pull off.
Others take a 1/4" soft copper or aluminum tube and simply wrap it around the exhaust manifold three or four times and connect the other end to the choke with a compression nut.

Hey Jeff,

You're in luck because I just ran across this issue weeks ago, simply use the search feature and type in "Carburetor Auto Choke Heater Tube" and you'll see the post by me, marvista66...there's a great pic in there by "MercuryMarc" that is a perfect example.

Much like MercuryMarc's, I made a soft 90 degree angle out of the carb down to the manifold, but ran the choke tub along the entire length of the manifold. At two places I secured the tubing via a hose clamp...This did the trick. It's not as pretty but it's very effective...

I'd imagine that when I go to headers the process is the same...

Thank you for all the help. I plan to run the tube down to the manifold and use a metal plate with hose clamp much like MercuryMarc. I believe, I will also route the heater hose through the hose clamp on the body of the automatic choke housing like Marvista66 talked about in his thread, since the choke already seems a little slow to open up.

Thanks again to all!!

The choke seems to work very well (in San Francisco where it's not too cold) with the choke tube attached to an aluminum tube that runs along the manifold and ends coverered in a metal shroud.

The kit was purchased at the local speed shop - I was told it is what is used when you install headers. As has been pointed out by Dave and others, the aluminum tube is supposed to be covered with a heat insulating white fabric sleeve that is included in the kit. The problem I encoutered was mostly cosmetic - the white sleeve gets dirty very fast and is really hard to clean. So I just skipped the sleeve and it works just fine - but it is not too cold anyway where I live.

My car's in central Alabama and I've never seen a reason to fab up a new choke tube. Pump the gas twice and let 'er rip!....Unless you want to be all 'not ghetto' or whatever...

Seriously though, I haven't had any problems. The fitting coming off my exhaust manifold rusted off many moons ago.

mine rusted many many moons ago to....I just goose the gas a little then pull out
