CI dual out header

See, and I personally dislike "fake" dual exhaust. I would rather just have a single pipe sticking out the back.

Nothing looks more wicked on a car than a single 4" pipe w/o any sort of tip sticking out the back.

Dual's for show, single for go.

I find this amusing. SLP made a single catback for F bodies that sold like wild fire.....and sounded great. 2JZ Supras make 1000HP with singles...its not the number of pipes, its the volume and volumetric efficiency. My 300rwhp SVO ran a 3" mandrel bent single...

Word.

A friend of mine's 9 second 4thgen camaro has a single 4" exhaust.

Where I work, it drives me crazy shipping 80 series flowmasters because of this argument.....why a single in dual out muffler?

You won't get the neat offbeat stacato of true duals, just the constant note of a single from two places.....

There is nothing wrong with a roudy motor huffing out one huge sewer pipe...

Thats a 3" single exhaust on a cammed stock displacement SVO.

I'm sure all nextel cup cars have single exhausts, yea right.

Seriously, some applications such as inline supercharged engines a large single pipe is ok.

Grandmothers go to church vehicle a single pipe is fine.

All depends on the application, only track, dyno & your ear will make the final choice.

The main reason I ran duals after the mufler, is because the car had a brand new GT vallance when I bought it. The previous owner was in the process of swapping in a V8 when he stopped working on it. At my age, I'm not worried about how it sounds, only how it runs. In fact, I prefer a quiet exhaust, as it's easier to hear the gear drive. :D

The 69 will have a single 3" pipe, when I get the time to install it. Not sure if I'm going to go with single or duals the 66?

Comparing a mostly street driven I6 to a Nextel Cup race machine is like comparing cabbage to apples....they are both food but that is where the comparison ends.

Very true. Anyhow, sometimes we car guys do things that are not strictly for performance. I love the look and sound of dual exhausts, so will probably go that route eventually.

i was gonna go with 2" duals and turbo mufflers. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1965...002QQitemZ120171626112QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V
what do you guys think of this ^ its cheap and i think itll work

Hay Patrick
That perticular unit is for a V8 if you look at the pic and read the artical.
Tim

yeah i know, im gonna have to modify it to fit the headers. ive seen it done in an article somewhere. as far as i know nobody makes an exhaust for the dual out headers on a straight 6. if anybody knows of any let me know.

i figure its probably easier/cheaper to get this and do it myself than have a muffler shop bend some pipes for it. ill also be able to control what goes on with my car.

Harte# - so you never eat "apfel-rötkohl"? :P

I don't know what that is but I do know I don't have to eat "road apples" to know they are definitely not an apples to apples comparison with "Granny Smiths". :P

I don't usualy reply to this kind of discussion ,But from the tone of the thread there are only a few old enough to remember what a split six sounded like in the fifties pretty cool! my old rust bucket has a cliffie long tube duel out header on a basicly stock 200 the head has been massaged some and pertronix ignition other than that nothing. when i got it it ran like a turd after doing those things it got stronger the exhuast is entirley built in the front drive with 2 1/4 pipe with an H pipe before the 2 1/2x18 inch purple horny glass packs with 2inch pipe from the mufflers on out every thing is siamised(side by side) out the back it made to much noise when i dumped it in frount of the rear wheel. that being said It sounds like an early jag it has some drone but I can peddle that and be cool with it all in all mine performs well where I am from folks heads turn when I fire it and i Don't give a shit what others think of it at all I did it for ME and I Like it JOE.

Patrick66,

This may be a little too late, but here goes.
I got the Clifford dual headers for my 200 CI I6. I love them. I had azcoupe take them to a JetHot coating facility to get them coated. They look the same as when I got them back almost 5 years ago. Before moving to Montana, my mustang was a daily driver and I drove it all over Arizona.
Now here is the thing and azcoupe mentioned this to me. The mating surface on the Clifford header is not as thick as on the ones azcoupe sells. I didn't think much of it until I started getting exhaust leaks. I've tried everything to correct it except re-surfacing the header. No one will do it because there isn't enough metal and the if I really tighten them down, I'll most likely crack the header. So until I replace my Clifford header with one of azcoupe's I'll have to keep replacing the gaskets. I've even gone with a custom carbon gasket from Flatout....... still leaked.
So my advice is to go with the best quality you can get. Save your money if you need to. It'll be worth it in the long run.
Now as far as the single vs dual header. I'm no engineer. I'm just an Air Force Vehicle Mechanic. Been one for the last 14 years. That just means they won't let me go near missles or jets with a wrench in my hand. (joke) Anyhow, yes there is going to be a trade off. Dual vs single vs weight vs volume flow. Most of the guys here know their numbers well. There's are lot of numbers floating around here. But then you also have to remember a few other factors. Are looking to build a sleeper car? Are looking for nastalgia?
Bottom line, buy what you think will work best for you.
Ted

i already bought the headers... hope that doesnt happen to me. ive heard some people on this forum takling about "high temp sealent", it might burn off but its worth a try.

:D Mike,I`m asking this from a"long life of product"standpoint.
How would stainless be for a header setup for our sixes?Or would the price be too dear for the average customer?
Thanks.
Leo

You have a point Leo. In the oil and gas industry, plastic coating pipe etc has gone up quite a bit. By the time I buy steel and plastic coat it, I am not too far away from Stainless Steel alloy costs. Plus you figure there is additional shipping to and from the coaters etc. Seems to me, that the price differential between stainless steels and carbon steel has come down.
