I've removed my old worn out clutch pedal spring on my '66 Mustang. How do you install a new spring on the pedal? How do you get the necessary leverage to put the spring back on the pedal? Is there a special tool for this?

Thanks,

Phil

Here's what I do,Assuming your assembly is still in the car?

There are three bolts that hold the spring bracket to the pedal support I remove two of them and loosen the third.I then put the spring on the pedal,I swing the bracket towards the pedal which gets it close enough to put the spring on.Now I use a small hardened punch or thin screwdriver placed through one of the holes I took a bolt out of.I pry the bracket into position until the other bolt hole lines up,I install that bolt, remove my punch install the third bolt and I tighten them down. That works for me everytime.Y

ou could always try grabbing the spring with a pair of vice grips and yank it back into place ,It sucks when the spring slips which it will.Ask me how I know.LOL.......Good luck.

If you are talking about the clutch assist spring, there is a simple trick to attacxh it.

Loosen and.or remove the pedal stop.
disengage the clutch equalizer rod from the bar.
swing the pedal back towards the driver
attach the spring and mounting bracket to the dash.
push the pedal to the floor
secure the pedal stop
adjust tension at the front bracket

Keep i mind that when the pedal assembly is correctly installed, there is much tension on the spring. That is why you swing the pedal towards the driver which yields zero tension so you can attach the bracket. You may or may not have to remove the pedal stop but it has to be at least loosened and slightly rotated to allow the pedal to swing backwards.

If all else fails, what you can do is get a box of big washers and drive them between the coils on each side of the spring. Keep inserting them until the spring is just long enough to attach. Then just push the clutch pedal to the floor and most of the washer will fall out.
