Coil change

Has anyone tried hooking up a TFI coil from a later model ford to replace the stock coil?
I have access to a mid 90's ford pickup for free.
I've read all the online material, sounds like a good idea, just wondering if anyone here has tried it.
It's going on an 82 Fairmount with DII dizzy.

This has been done and reportedly works well. You have to interface the DS2 to the TFI coil by using a GM HEI ignition module. Check out www.gofastforless.com . I have the parts to convert my truck but have been to busy surviving winter. I plan to finish the conversion soon.

:D Did some more reading online.
From all indications, I can use my duraspark setup as is and add the TFI coil.
Already have the brass-tipped cap and rotor.
I'll salvage a used TFI coil and mounting bracket along with the connector and coil wire from a salvage yard....$$$$
I'll post my results as soon as I can !!
Meanwhile, this makes for interesting reading.

P.S. I have already advanced my initial timing to 16 from 10 degrees and backed off the vacuum advance 4 turns (counterclockwise).
Difference is very noticeable even for a worn-out 200 with auto.

P.S.S. Thanks for the link ..I had'nt read it already.

I've heard mix reviews about the old TFI's giving out too quickly. Why not look for a DS2 coil while you're at the salvage yard?

I don't think a TFI is really an upgrade...

Honestly, I would look for a MSD, Accel, or Flamethrower coil. Save up the money, getting used electronics from a junkyard is something you really have to be careful with.

You are both right !!!

First- I have a DS-2 setup already in my 1982 Futura.
Second- I need to pinch $$$ where I can. Buying the parts at salvage will accomplish this, plus I will have the extra parts I need such as the TFI coil mount and wiring.

If the upgrade performs as I hope, NEW wires and coil will be added.
And of course I will post any results from this test.

Sucks ta be poor doncha know :(
