Can anyone tell me what would be the highest CR I could achieve IF I want to use regular (87 octane) gasoline? And is there a formula for figuring this out?

Rule of thumb is Octane/10 for an iron wedge head with carbs and non-computer controlled ignition, so for regular fuel 8.5 - 9.0 CR. Add another point for alloy heads.

Octane/10 is shorthand for "Octane divided by 10"

Nothing. It could be 9 or 11 as well. It's a rule of thumb.
