DuraSpark Module for Load-A-Matic Conversion

Just picked up a DuraSparkII distributor from a 1980 Granada and got a module off the shelf at a local slavage yard. In the sticky about the conversion, it mentions getting the module with the blue strain relief. I got one with a green relief (of course). The wiring diagram in the sticky article shows 2 wires for connection to power. A red one and the white timing retard wire. My module also has a blue wire. My module has the Motorcraft name on it and cooling fins and the numbers: D5AF.

Is this an earlier DuraSparkI box? Anyone know what I got? I can return it and exchange it for another if need be.

I believe you got a Duraspark I box for a couple of reasons- 1) the D5AF code- Duraspark I went from 1973-1976 and all the Duraspark II boxes carry D6 or later codes, and 2) Duraspark II boxes came with blue, red, brown, yellow, or white strain reliefs. I've never heard of a green relief in Duraspark II.

These boxes were all different. Red for example was California only, with no ballast resistor and a low voltage coil. White was for 2.3L with start retard only. Blue is the 49 state, most widely used Duraspark II box and I believe the one you should go back and get one of. Otherwise you could be chasing weird ignition gremlins forever.

Yep, I figured it was the wrong one. I just didn't read the sticky thoroughly enough before I went looking. I'm heading out for the GoodGuys hotrod show in Des Moines in a few minutes. Perhaps I'll find a deal on an MSD box in the swap meet. Then, there's Iola WI next weekend, one of the biggest swap meets in the country.

Back to the Fifties (11,000 cars) in St. Paul 2 weeks ago, GoodGuys in Des Moines today, Iola next weekend. Its good to live here. :D
