:? Hello, my engine is not starting would like some ideas. I have a good charge from the battery, replaced solenoid taday. When i turn key i get nothing but a click from the engine. Plan to replace starter in the morning. Any other ideas on anything else that could be causing this problem?? Thanks for any and all help. Mark

Here is a list of all of the possible problems:
ignition
coil
points
vaccume advance
distributer
solenoid
Weak battery
starter
Grounds

So the engine isn't turning over?

Check your battery connections. Also, you may have a weak charge on the battery.

Its the battery most likely. I had the same problem. Do you have a battery charger?

To check to see if it is the batter, take to screwdrivers (with insulated handles) and touch each screwdriver to each side of the solenoid (one to each side) and then touch the two screwdrivers together (it will spark and smoke etc, not to worry!) this will send a full power surge to your starter. If the car starts, you have a weak battery, if it still just clicks, you have another problem (not the battery) - this is called jumping off the solenoid

:) Thanks all for all the help. Went over the car again and checked all connections and wiring. Some tightning was called for and car is up and running. Hopefully this will be the last from this problem. Thanks again. Also have a question posted on the duraspark 2 like to know to go w/ single or dual advance. I live in Maine and this is a summer driver 200 engine. I will be adding OZ head holley 350 carb and possibly new cam but that is about all changes to the engine for the summer. Any help on the duraspark would be appreciated. Also what module to go w/. Mark

Make sure the ground cable on the battery is good. Had same thing happen to me and I had good battery and replaced starter solenoid and nothing. I had it looked at in a Electrical shop and it was bad ground cable off battery.

Thanks, I will check the ground wire. Never thought of that. Good info thanks again :D Mark

Hi bax,

Just left a post on your "Ignition upgrade" question I think will help with the DSII / Pertronix question.

I can't even begin to count the number of vehicles I have worked on over the years that wouldn't start and just needed the battery terminals and connections cleaned. As my avionics instructor in the military told us, those evil corrosion monsters are always working, and they never get tired  Also, don't forget to clean the top of the battery. I have seen some batteries with enough conductive deposits on them that they would discharge just sitting there. You can test this with a VOM by touching the Common lead to the Neg. post, and then touch the Positive lead to the battery case near the Positive post. If you get any voltage reading, it means the case is in need of cleaning. Then move the positive lead closer to the Negative post. I have actually measured a full 12 volts within an inch of the negative post on some VERY dirty batteries. Just keep things clean and tight and you won't have near as much trouble. I always hose mine off in the car wash, except for the VW
