Engine stalls

I have a Pertronix ignition, instead of points... I have a flame thrower coil, new spark plug wires, cap & rotor, new plugs.... set the timing....

The engine stalls out everyonce in a while, like when I back out of my driveway in Reverse then stop to put in Drive is when it stops running... restart it runs fine, but, stalls periodically.

Any ideas on what is happening and how to cure?

Sounds like your ignition is fine, I'd think it's in the carb or choke.

Any other issues with the engine, like hesitation, stumbling, occaisional miss, etc?

What is engine idle speed when it is in drive. Make sure when you set the engine idle speed to spec, the engine is in drive and not park.

I would also look to see if the vacuum diaphram still holds a vacuum. If you have a leaking diaphram it may be causing dravability issues.

I agree sounds like its not idleing fast enought.... or the choke isn't working properly.... Idle should be 650 to 700 in Drive at running temp. or I believe cold the choke should meke it runn about 1000 to 1200 rpms.

Ok the idel speed at cold is HIGH... then when it warms up it needs to be "kicked down" and idles at around 850rpm... Not sure how to check for the choke coming off and not sure how to check for vaccuum... please help

It has a Motorcraft Carb

to check choke after the motor is warmed up pull the top off the air filter and just look at the choke it should be standing streight up wide open.. as for a vacuum leak use some carb cleaner of WD40 and spray around the base of the and hoses and such and see if the idle changes if it does then their may be a vacuum leak...
A nother way to tell is if you screw the air/fule mixture screw in all the way the motor should die unless there is a vacuum leak.
another thing is the mixture screw adjusted right??? should be adjusted to best idle. turn it in or out to acheve thise a little goes a long way 1/8 of a turn at a time..
850 sounds fast unless thats in N. drive should be about 650 to 700 rpm.. are you reading you gage corectly? If you are idleing to fast it well be past the idle cercut (sp) and the mixture screw won't do anything.
hope this helps
