Howdy,
In my local newspaper some one is selling a 170 engine and transmission for $350. The years are 72/76. Are there any differences between these years and a 1966 engine/ tranny. I want to rebuild my 1966 200, and it would be conveniant to still have a running car.

Howdy Generalfonz:

Is that price for a new engine and trans? If not, it seems a little high, unless they have paper to verify a recent rebuild or guarentee it somehow.

A 170 will be a step down from your 66 200. Can you stand that?

The engine should swap easily. Check the shape of the pans for steering linkage clearance. The trannies could be another story. You didn't say what's in your '66 or what the 170 has behind it, but trans mounts changed a bunch after '66.

If I were in your shoes, I'd keep looking for the right combo of 200 engine and trans to rebuild and then swap that whole thing in once. A good builder, complete '78 200 should go for no more then $100 around southeast Idaho. That should include everything from the air cleaner to the pan plug and fan to the flywheel, including the electronic ignition and alternator. A good builder tranny would likely be another $100. If you can get the whole works together maybe $150 for the works. Rebuild it and put it in once!

Anlushac11- FYI- 170s were indeed manufactured and used as an option in several lines of FoMoCo autos until 1972. Head castings are the same as with 200s and 250s. CR was controlled and adjusted by different pistons and deck height.

To verify I have a 1966 c4 auto trans, The one I might buy is an auto. I just dont want to buy another driveshaft and such.

Didnt realize they made them that late.

Is it the same as the old 170 or does it use the 7 main 200 block?
