Exhaust, and Headers Question

So I finally got some money to spend on my car. I was thinking a new exhaust maybe dual. My tailpipe now is like dangling down and i put on a little exhaust tip, you can see the screw! Really sad But I want to know what you guys have to say. I talked to this muffler guy in my town said he would do it for ~$400. Does that sound about right? I can't do it myself, but should i go to someone else. The $400 was for dual flows. But what about headers? Do I need new ones? What does it actually do?

All of these questions...but I greatly appreciate your answers, comments, and suggestions.

My dual outlet exhaust in my '80 Stang with chrome tips and tax came to about $345, so $400 is not that much more IMHO.

Just make sure you get a warranty with it.

The cheapest route is usually to install factory V8 duals and have a muffler shop do the final connections.

One thing to think about is do you want true duals (2 lines all the way out with 2 mufflers) for performance and maximum sound, or do you want dual exhaust tips (one line going from the engine to the 1 muffler which has two pipes going out the back of the car) where you get the look of duals (dual tailpipes) but with only one muffler (camaro Style). There will be a good bit of price difference depending on what you exactly want. I had true duals (2 stainless steel lines running all the way out to 2 flowmaster mufflers and 2 chrome tailpipe tips) for about $260 (done by a Really good friend of mine - I asked him though, and he said to do it for anyone else would be between $300 - $350).

As far as the headers, they will improve HP and MPG by assisting in air flow, and they will Drastically improve sound. Several different people make headers for the 200, I have Clifford dual outlet headers on mine and I LOVE them, but they are pricey ($299 plus shipping).

I don't kow that dual exhaust is that important, but a header definetly is. The way I did mine was using a clifford dual out header going into two 2" pipes which extend about 30" before coming into a 2 & 1/4" y into a 2 1/4" turbo muffler. The rest of the tailpipe is 2 $1/4". That exhaust only cost me about $250, which was good since I dropped like $375 on the headers
Remeber that as gasses cool they contract, so the further back you go the less significant the diameter of the pipes is. The complicated bit of work is bending the pipes so they go over the axle, so you can save a buck by bringing the pipes together before you get to the axle. it just doesn't look as cool.
