exhaust leak

I (hopefully) find the source of one problem and another pops up. I am pretty sure I have an exhaust leak coming from the rear of the exhaust. I assume I will need to remove the exhaust manifold and replace the gaskets. Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Howdy Hickorystang:

I saw your other post looking for a source for a new manifold. It sounds like you have several problems. Is the leak at the manifold a gasket problem or a cracked manifold? Is it factory original, because the factory didn't use an exhaust manifold gasket. Go figure???? I have no experience with aftermarket/new manifolds. I've been lucky enough to pick up solid vintage manifolds from the recycle yard. I prefer the '68/'69 castings as the best compromise between strength and clean castings. Refurbishing includes a flat mill on the mating surface and new studs. Then some grinding to clean it up and finish with a coating of Eastwood's cast manifold coating.

Hope that's helpful.

Hey David,

Hot really sure what the cause it, just that there is a definite exhaust leak. Figured I would go ahead and replace the exhaust manifold with a new one while replacing the gasket. If that rusty piece connected to the muffler isn't the exhaust manifold what is it? You have my curiosity going now.

Thanks,
Steven

The head pipe (steel tubing) is connected between the exhaust manifold (cast iron) and than to the muffler.

But the 200ci does have an exhaust manifold. Wonder if David meant they came from the factory without an exhaust manifold gasket?

Also, am thinking about using a 50/50 mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone to break the manifold bolts. Anyone ever use that as a penetrating fluid?

That's what I think David meant. They typically did not.
As far as penetrating lube, I suggest picking up a can of "PB Blaster" it has done wonders for me since I started with my junkyard Corvair all the way through my grandpa's BelAir
