exhaust manifolds interchangable?

Are all years of the 170,200,etc interchangable when it comes to the exhaust manifolds? I found a couple for the older engines, but I am looking for one for my '83 200.

My '78 engine has bigger ports than my '66 engine. You might be able to put a bigger port onto a smaller port head, but I'm not sure.

They are interchangeable.

The '68 and later are better because of bigger volume and outlet. Up until '65 or so they used a flat gasket, '65 and after used donut gaskets but like I said in '68 they got a bigger diameter outlet so the downpipe has to be resized when mixing and matching.

Sometime around '75 or so they got an integral cat, avoid unless you have to have it (stupid emissions). These tend to be plugged up.

I have a 78 Fairmont without the cat on the manifold, and pulled the head and manifold off a 79 zeph that had no cat, these just have the bungs for egr stuff.

My 82 Mustang had a cat in the pipe right after the exhaust manifold. It was a lot wider than the rest of the pipe too.

Howdy All:

All exhasut manifolds are interchangeable. But, there are differences that matter.

FYI 1960 - '62- Manifolds have a flat gasket between the outlet and the head pipe. They have a 1 3/4" outlet. They are lighter and prone to crack.

'63 - '68 - Manifolds from this point on have a donut type gasket between the outlet and the head pipe. They have a 2" outlet. They are heavier and have more material and gusseting in weak areas.

'69 and later- Same dimensions and strength, but all have more bulges and taps for emmissions stuff. Some in the 80s are the type with the quick light cat attached directly to the manifold.

We prefer the '67 - '68 era because they are strong, have good dimensions and are clean of bulges and taps.

Larry- Are you looking for one that you can hook up all of the '83 emmissions stuff?

Adios, David

Well, I'm looking to get rid of most of it. Especially the cat bolted to the manifold. I figure if I can run a universal cat downstream and still make it look factory maybe I can get away with it. I would like to replace the entire exhaust system eventually either starting wiht a header or an older manifold.
