so recently i installed my flamethrower and pertronix I...started up my car (65 mustang 200 automatic)...it kinda started up a bit rough, but then started to smooth out...and will run fine in park. so i thought to myself, sweet, maybe this pertronix was a good idea...but then as i shifted into reverse i thought again. after i shifted into reverse my engine got really shaky and died on me, so i put it back in park, started her back up easily, and shifted her quick past reverse into neutral, and everything was quite alright. i put it into drive and the same thing happened, a little bit of chugging and death...so back to park it went and i started it up, this time while shifting into reverse i gave it a tiny bit of gas, shifted to reverse with the brake on and some gas, and it survived the shift...it chugged pretty bad in reverse/drive and my exhaust was spitting out LOTS of white smoke that seemed very "fuely" and not "oil-ey"...the more gas i gave it in reverse, the more qhite smoke i got out of my exhaust pipe, but as soon as i let off the gas, the engine just shook and died...anyone have any idea how to even begin diagnosing this problem, its starting to give me a headache and all i want to do is cruise around in my car. thanks a lot, i know some of you geniuses will be able to help me out *crosses fingers*

8) bump the timing a few degrees and see if that changes things. also bump the idle speed a bit. it sounds like you just need to tune the settup.

I agree...sounds like you may need to retune. Reset your timing and retune the carb, especially the idle speed. Remember, Autos need about 12* BTDC (stock, by the book) initial timing.

Pertronix sometimes has the effect of making the timing so exact that it will require you to retune the car since there is not as much leeway in the timing anymore.

Also make sure that the choke plate is functioning. Your choke plate may be causing a rich mixture, especially since it sounds like you can't drive it and get the engine warmed up.
