gas tank leak

My Fairlane sat for a few months during the summer and fall with very little gas in the tank. Upon refilling the tank, it leaked gas on the garage floor and then the driveway when I moved it. It seems to have stopped leaking now and I'm pretty sure there the tank is still pretty full. Is this something to concern myself with? Am I likely in need of a new tank? If so, anyone know of a good source for a tank for a 65 Fairlane? Any leads, advice appreciated.

are you sure it wasnt just either over filled...i dunno...just guessing. Nuit a gas tank leak is pretty seriuos....

get it looked at

You can get under the car and look for evidence of wet /sained surfaces from the leak. If you are lucky, it may be a vent hose or something similar rather than the tank. I am not familiar with the plumbing on the Fairlane.

Not sure about the Fairlane but on my Comet the sending unit is in the back of the tank not the top so it might be that the seal just dryed out and was leaking if its stop it may be OK now.. You know got wet from the gas and swelled up and is sealing now.

Due to a leaky trunk weatherstrip, the tank in my '69 Falcon developed a minor leak. It was leaking at the pinchweld where the upper and lower halves of the tank meet. Trunk would get water in it, and it just sat there corroding my tank. Only leaked above 3/4 full.

Solution: Had the tank internally sealed. Local mechanic knew someone who did tank repair. For minor leaks they could do some sort of epoxy sealer lining in the whole tank (pour in, swirl around for complete coverage, drain excess, let cure). Not sure exactly what it was.

It was well done, and cost less than a new gas tank.

If you do find a leak, this may save you some dinero.

Yes the re-seal is good too. Most radiator shops can do it..
I had mine done cost was about $60.oo

One thing to check is the rubber hose that connects the filler neck with the tank, its like a radiator hose. I have a 62 and had a 64 fairlane and the connecting hose was rotten on each one, if you filled the tank it leaked until the fuel level went down. One thing to check is the rubber hose that connects the filler neck with the tank, its like a radiator hose.

And while you're at it, check the rubber hose that connects the fuel tank sending unit to the hard line running to your fuel pump.
