Getting real performance out of a 6 cylinder

My girlfriend wants a classic mustang, but her dad will only let her get a 6. She is up for that (but I have a 66 with a 351W, and she kinda wants some power), but I told her that if its possible I'd help her get her car running with the stock V8s (which in and of itself is both not all that fast and not a huge feat).

What are some cost effective upgrades for a 65-66 200 ci six? And what does it take to make 200 hp? 250?

There are plenty of options out there, it's just how much $$$$ you want, or more importantly your girlfriend and her father, want to put into it. You could switch out the head from a 250 or one from OZ. Rebuild that 200 with a performance parts from FordSix Performance Parts! I would say over a $1000 for a total rebuild.

Or for starters, put a header on there, upgrade the ignition system, get the head redone, and put a 2brl Holley 2300 on there.

Like I said the options are out there, just coming up with the $$$$ may be the problem.

Cost effective?
check out buying the Ford Six handbook, next step should be ignition (Duraspark II, or Petronix system), after that, wander over to Mike's website and see what he's got cookin right now, if i ever make up my mind about what i'm going to do engine wise (i have a I6 currently in the car, but i have a 351W sitting at my dad's) i'm going to look at his package deals

like Andrew said, the potential, knowlege, and parts are there, but it can take money to get them all together

good luck with it

howdy sadbuttrue,

there´s no replacement for displacement.

pull the 200ci stocker and cram in a 69-73 250ci straight six; although they are higher due to increased stroke, they fit nicely.
Take care of the aircleaner; a little fabbing there and you can make it look dead stock. Talk about sleeper image...

When you´ve got hold of that 250, think of cam, compression, and a well tuned induction and a free flowing exhaust.

how much power do you think a 250 with a 6 into 2 into 1 header, some sort of intake, a cam, and some compression would get me? I know i didn't include many specifics, mainly because i don't know whats avaliable for a six and if the gains are similar to those of a similarly displaced 8 (for example, are the numbers comparable to a 289, since they are relatively close in displacement?).

for one, if you are wanting a seperate intake for the 250, you are going to have to get a new head as well, all US Ford small sixes had the integral log head, so you'd have to either get the Aussie 250-2V head, or the Argie head
dunno 'bout the rest

In the April 2002 Mustang Monthly, they have a 200 putting out 201rwhp. All it had was a Paxton s/c on an otherwise stock engine(even has an exhaust manifold instead of headers  ). Think about what that same s/c setup would do to a nicely modded 200 like Mike's. :D

I'm trying to see if I can get the information about that guy's setup. Should be pretty driveable though; compared to our impressions of what 1hp per ci would result in. He drives the car everyday.

That was a cool setup!
completely plain wimbledon white hardtop six ... 200+HP

irrc he had a T-5 and different rear gears as well, but no other mods
