Got Gas?

- well it certainly seems as though I don’t. I was having some idle issues with the Autolite 1100 (read here), causing the car to die, and cranking it back eventually caused the battery to drain dead. So I jerked the battery yesterday and charged it overnight. Installed the battery this morning and it cranks hard, but wont start.

I pulled the air cleaner off the carb and pulled the throttle linkage, but to my surprise did not see a squirt of gas or any sign of the barrel being wet. I pulled the hose off the front of the carb and again pulled the throttle linkage, but again no gas came through the line or hose, at least not in the engine compartment.

Yesterday I was putting tools back into my trunk, after installing a new shifter cable (read here), when I smelled gas just a little stronger than normally, but after sniffing around the trunk and undercarriage the smell dissipated. I thought I was pretty mechanically inclined before, but to be honest I don’t have a clue where to start. This is my daily driver, so time is important.

OH Man... you have to have eather the motor running or at least turning over to get any gas out of the hose. unless your using an electrict pump the rotaion of the motor pumps gas in thourgh the line to the carb..

I would check all your lines and the sending unit to make sure its not leaking if there is a small leak most of the time a stock pump wouldn't be able to pull gas through the lines.
Try dumping some gas into the carb and then try to start it see if it well run for even just a little bit some times this well help get fuel to the carb if it has run out of sat for a long time.
Hopes this helps.

 Now that I think about it, your right, the car was running all those times I saw the gas squirt when I pulled the throttle linkage. I'm going to have someone hold the fuel line in a jug while I crank to see if gas comes out and try pouring some gas in the carb as well.

Thanks,

Jon

NO Prob...
Gas should squart out inside the carb with out the motor running as long as there is gas in the carb float bowl.. But turnning it over well tell ya if the pump is pulling any gas.. and like I said sometimes if it has sat for some time or run out of gas it may need to be primed started to get enough pumping action to get the gas flowing... maybe pull the top off the carb and see if there is any fuel in the carb if there is and it steal doesn't pump gas into the carb with the pull of the linkage the acelerator pump may be bad and that would make for hard starting as when first starting (cold persay) it needs a squart of gas to get going.
Take Care

Check to see if the small rubber hose connecting the gas tank to the chassis fuel line is cracked. It will allow air to enter the line when the pump runs, and you won't get any fuel while cranking.

Success! Poured some gas directly into the barrel and she fired right up. Readjusted the carb with a vacuum gauge (more by ear) and noticed a slight exhaust leak near the headers. Buttoned her up and she ran better than a top. I think initially my curb idle speed was too low. Not to mention the car was parked on an incline for about a week, but the exhaust leak wasn’t helping either. Thanks for your help guys. If you can think of anything else I should check, let me know.
