Got my 250!

Bob I have a 250/c4 in a 62 Deluxe. Here are my Cliffs notes. Clearence issues 1) Firewall to tunnel had to be "massaged" with a small sledge. Not a lot just enough for clearence, watch you don't hurt the heater plenum on the inside 2) I fabricated lowering mounts for the engine and a drop tranny crossmember. All for hood to carb clearence and I'm running a carter RBS Shortest carb that fits. 3) with the motor lowered I had to flip the center link to the under side of the pitman and idler arms. This required purchase of a 7 degree tapered reamer and reaming the taper holes in the pitman and idler arms the other way. If you don't the center link hits the starter. I also put an 8" rear end from a mustang II in.The 7.25 in there won't last behind the 250. There is barley room for the stock exhaust, a header may have issues. Brakes now need upgrading.

Hi cobraguy,

By Deluxe you mean a '62 Falcon Wagon Deluxe? If so, I would expect the engine bay to be very similar to my '62 Ranchero.

Do you have photos of your lowering mount and drop tranny crossmember? I understand that most people start with Maverick motor mounts. I'm considering the CI aluminum head and intake manifold, don't know if that makes vertical (hood) carb clearance better or worse.

Where do you find a seven degree tapered reamer?

I was already planning to eventually do an eight inch rear end swap so that I could have the stronger rear end as well as five lugs in the rear. Maybe I shouldn't run it too hard until I have time to make that swap.

Thank you,
Bob

The car is 62 2dr. Deluxe means chrome strips and washboards and fancy hubcaps. Your Ranchy should be identical in the engine bay. I can get some pictures of the mounts and crossmember. I have no idea what the 250/C4 came from. I'm thinking a 69 or 70 Mustang. It has slanty saddle style motor mounts that look like V8 mounts almost. The reamer I got off Ebay I think, I could probably be talked out of it pretty easy. The fire wall massage went like this. I put the car on tall jackstands all four corners, center link, swaybar, radiator, and crossmember out. Dropp the engine and tranny in as a unit. With it hanging where I thought it looked right I made note of places it hit the firewall and how far it had to go to get close to the mounts. I dropped the engine to the ground and start swinging. The seam flange at the front of the tunnel gets rolled back flat and the corner from firewall to tunnel gets massaged up the firewall a couple of inches. Be careful the heater plenum is on the other side of the tin your moving. Once I got the engine positioned at the Falcon side motor mounts I used a broom stick across the fenders to check underhood clearence. I had to come down a couple inches. I made cardboard templates and fabbed new mounts. I am using a snorkle and cone style Air Cleaner. PM me your Email and I'll send pics direct. Rich

^^^^^This is the info on the Firewall I was realting to. Been three notes about it since 2002.

Without any massaging, you could just run a Mustang II auto matic gearbox and starter and seperator plate, that will eliminated the need for a big freindly hammer. Then you'd just need the automatic flexplate for the 1975-1978 Mustang II V8, and remove the 28 Ounce balance.

Its all Slowly unfolding brilliantly, your cleaver question and good processes will nail this project brillantly. What is really cool is a 250 with an alloy head will be almost the same weight as the stock iron headed 200.

Big friendly hammer or M2 trans, either way you play it, it will fit great!

Since I already have an auto trans in the car that I * think * is a C4 (it's a case fill trans with 11 pan bolts, and see my flexplate/torque converter photos on the transmission forum), I will probably use that one if it is compatible, just picking up a bellhousing and torque converter to match the 157 tooth flexplate that came with the 250. This probably means: big friendly hammer.

Thank you,
Bob
