Head Gaskets (Again)

After re-reading many posts and the Sticky on the different heads used through the years and the effect of the modern composite gaskets, I have a simple question.

Were the thicker composite gaskets used OEM in the later years of the small six?.

Also, since the heads are interchangeable, are the gaskets all compatible?. I have a couple of OEM steel gaskets and wonder if I could I use them on a later D7 head? . I thought the gasket's cylinder bore sizes will be wrong(?).

For my rebuild, I picked up a totally un-molested 200 that came out of a 79 Fairmont to use as a core. The guy I got it from was the second owner, and knew the car's history. The engine had never been cracked open since new. When I pulled the head, the gasket was the steel ford gasket. Not sure about the last few years, but in 79 they were still using the steel ones.

It is our understanding and personal experience that all 200 from the factory came with the .025" steel shim type gasket
144 & 170= CODE-6051C
200 & 250= D3DE-6051AA

When they were a replacement part the # was C9DZ 6051-C.

All steel shim OEM gaskets we've been able to measure are 3.75".

FoMoCo did put out a replacement composite, C9DE 6051 C at .037" compressed thickness. It's bore is 3.81"

144 and 170 use a common gasket. 200 & 250 use a common gasket. All aftermarket gaskets be've been able to measure for 200/250 are 3.81".

What are the part #s on your steel shim gaskets?

Thanks CZLN6 for the info. I will be looking for the part numbers on those steel gaskets. I believe they are aftermarket but I will take a look. I got one on E-BAy and another from Egge Machine.

Since the heads are interchangeable on the 170/200/250 engines, I presumed the gaskets were. From the info provided I now assume there is a difference in the Bore size of the gaskets to match the cylinders. Are there any other differences noted between the gaskets?.

I am not currently aware of any other differences. Since the 144 & 170 share a common bore of 3.5" and the 200 and 250 share a bore of 3.68" that would indicate that difference.

If the part # doesn't make the application for your steel shim gaskets clear, measure the bore and go from there.

I don't have measurements on the Cortico gaskets yet as they are new to me. I will soon.

Heres some part numbers I have that are on my website.

Ford 144-170 CID CODE-6051A CODE-6051C

Aftermarket 144-170 CID Fel-Pro 7916 SH, Victor 1163BS, McCord 6483

Ford 200 CID C3OZ-6051A C5AZ-6051B

Ford 250 CID C9DZ-6051B

These are all steel shim head gaskets. They made 2 different size gaskets. 1 for the 144-170 ci engines and another for the 200-250 ci engines. They have different bore diameters and are not interchangeable and I have both of them (not for sale) out in my shop.

Continuing with my education as to Head Gaskets, I checked part #'s on the steel and NAPA composite I have. Building a reference archive for the forum.

The steel gaskets I bought on E-bay and from Egge Machine are both :

> FelPro # 7916
-Compressed thickness = .025
Which M_G ID's as aftermarket for 144/170


> NAPA HS3910VJ Victor Reinz Nitro Seal VR2000
-Compressed thickness = .044
-Listed on the NAPA box for 144/170/200/250 1960 - 83.

= larger bore for the 200/250 but listed for 144/170 (?)
What happens to CR using this 200/250 gskt on a 144/170?.

I have two 1982 engines, one is apart (will check the number on gasket) and the other is in the car - it is still handling 20 psi of boost just fine (for now)

Both are stock steel shim, 1982....
