heat shield

Has anyone ever thought about trying to make a heat shield for the stock exhaust manifold to keep some of the heat off the intake log and carb???
It seems to me that it might help a lot with hot start problems and boiling the gas out of the carb.

it would be pretty simple to do, but im not sure it will keep the carburetor from getting hot. the reason the carb gets so hot is because it sits directly above the center exhaust port, its not necessarily the manifold thats the problem.

but it would keep your overall engine bay temps down, and you could make it look cool.

It won't hurt to cut down radiant heat, but conducted heat is far greater. Using the water jacket in your carb spacer will help a little, as might an additional phenolic or hardwood spacer (if there's the clearance).

Concur with Addo- best thing we did to cut our boiling was to make some spacers from phenolic- stopped the heat transfer from the hot log to the carbs. We bought a few sheets from Aircraft Spruce and Specialty, cut it to fit, and the problem was solved.

I have the carb spacer on with the heater hoses running thru it. The old timers used to make a wooden spacer for their flatheads to keep them from vapor locking. I think they used a specific kind of wood but I cant remember what it was. I think it was maple but I'm not sure.
