Heat soak?

Is it bad? Can you do anything about it? You know, when you shut off the engine and the temp gauge goes way up before coming down.

Also, was a rather warm day today, so I took out the Comet for a drive and the temp gauge got a bit above halfway. When I pulled it back into the garage, I pulled out the temp gun and read about 220F over the sides of the block. About 190 on the top hose and only about 10 degees less than that at the bottom. Does this tell anyone anything? Suggestions? Comments? Rhetoric? :D

Thats normal your ok, you should pay more attention to the water temp than under the hood unless the radiant heat is damaging things. As long as the temp doesn't become accessive like over 200 degrees while the engine is running your fine. Of corse some engines just run a little hot all the time. when the temp becomes greater than 200 damage to the engine may occur.

8) heat soak is normal. cast iron retains heat well when you are running, but when you shut down and have no coolant circulation, it rids itself of the heat it retained when driving. it becomes a major problem when the cooling system cannot handle the initial load on restarting the engine.

one way to lower heat soak is by getting an electric fan with a timer, an electric pump would help too, but those aren't made for ours
