Heater hose connection Question

Hi gang,
Does anyone recall which heater hose gets connected to the carb heater plate? And then which hose goes to the top side of the heater core?
I've been trying to find a diagram or at least a photo. Seems like the top hose, if put into the slot doohicky on the valve cover makes the hose run into the choke on the carb.

I'm in LA where it gets quite hot. Is there any reason to hook this up? In which case, which hose goes where?

Nope.
Only if you want the heater to work.

Hose from water pump to heater hose fitting closest to passenger side (the input) this would also have the shut off valve if equipped. The other side (return or output) goes to carb
