All Small Six Help! Did I just screw up my new build?

This relates to all small sixes
Just a warning. There are clone copies of the Facet pumps being sold on EBay and Amazon.

See the picture below:

The facet pump that is listed is sized for your application.

We took into consideration that there is a little extra leeway by giving just a bit more fuel volume. Looking at the pump you just posted should work. It does come with extra stuff.

Pegasus does sell lots of pumps. They are an authorized dealer. So, I would feel comfortable with their suggestion.

But, let me run the numbers to make sure.

I’m assuming that even with either of the pumps I should keep pressure regulator?

One thing that I do see is the pump that Pegasus recommended doesn’t have a one>way check valve. This means the carburetor fuel line pressure will be relieved when the pump shuts off. This could be beneficial.

I like the gravity feed idea. Very little pressure there.
You might also try adjusting the regulator down to a lower setting.
As long as your carb gets some fuel flow, it has a shot at running.
If it works at a very low pressure, you can ease it back up.

, counterfeit everywhere. Why no one can be trusted completely nowadays?

I believe the Facet-Purolator ones on Amazon are legit. It says it’s made in USA in the description of most of them and it does say made in USA on the label in the photos. They also have a proper 1 year warranty.

I saw this one which seems to tick all of the right boxes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BMBSPS

@awasson btw, what block off plate will you use for the mechanical fuel pump opening?
And what electric fuel pump are you using?

Today I put in what appears to be an Edlebrock knockoff. Someone gave it to me with some parts I bought a couple of years ago and it’s just been sitting in a shelf since then. It’s brand new no-name that I can recognize and doesn’t look like it had ever been out of the box. It’s about the same size of that Facet so I figured if I don’t like it or it ends up being undependable, I can easily swap it out for a Facet unit. I’ve installed it to the front frame rail on the drivers side where the fuel line follows the firewall up to the fuel pump. It’s right where the brake line and gas line bolt to the frame rail and just behind the Z-bar that is above it. Where I’ve put it, there is no opportunity for the clutch or gas pedal linkage to interfere with it.

It has a filter on the inlet and a nipple on the outlet. All 5/16” fittings. I used modern high pressure hose because it’s engineered for fuel with alcohol although I try very hard not to use fuel with ethanol. There’s about 4” between the metal fuel line and the inlet and a couple of feet from the pump to my regulator.

I’m going to grab a block off plate for a small block ford v8 (289/302). In the meantime, I’ve got some super lite oil in the mechanical fuel pump and a hose between the inlet and outlet (no hose clamp in case it builds pressure). It seems happy, quiet and the oil is just circulating. No leakage or anything to be concerned about.

The electric pump has a noticeable whir but it’s not super loud. I might mount it on a piece of rubber to insulate it but I’m not bothered by it at all.

Pressure is at 3 lbs. I had to back it off because it was about 4.5 when I first fired it up. Now it seems to stay at 2.5lbs - 3 lbs. it hasn’t affected the tune in any way but I was having some issues with the engine starting to stumble if I sat in traffic or just stopped and left the car running. My theory was that the fuel was boiling in the mechanical pump. I’ve only done about a 5 mile shakedown run but at the halfway point, I stopped and let the car just sit idling for about 5 minutes and it didn’t stumble or have any issues so it seems to be the solution I was looking for.

Another night and another attempt lol
So I wanted to try gravity feed fuel to possibly exclude one of the issues and attack another one. Well, didn't go well...as usual for now. I'm having serious doubts before each attempt now.
So what we got: I left everything as it was from the previous try: timing was supposed to be around 12-13 degrees advance; double checked the float level: 18.5 mm height and 23mm full drop. Carb was set the same way - 1.5 turns out for idle mixture screws and 0.5 turn in for idle speed.
I got that mini bike tank off amazon, that should be at about 1.5 liter capacity, so I probably filled it up with about 400 ml (a bit less than 2 cups) of fuel.
I think my timing from previous run was waaaaay off - I'm not sure if that's because I set the timing with open throttle to keep the engine running or something else. This time I've checked it with the light and it showed that I was firing #1 past TDC for a lot. Judge by the sound of the engine, but it was not normal. I don't think I can set timing accurately without the car somewhat running okay. You see me trying to get to the previous mark on the dizzy to normalize the timing, which I couldn't do. Felt like I fucked up timing so much, that it wasn't firing correct cylinders.

Now to the carb. During those 3-4 min of running and trying, it pretty much drained all the fuel from that little tank (about 400 ml). I was flooded again and had to remove spark plugs and crank the engine to get fuel out of cylinder 6. But so far the fuel didn't seem to seep into the oil pan.
I ended up removing the carb and all gaskets under it were soaking with fuel as well. Not sure if that's a normal or if they should be at least not soaking wet.

Removed the dizzy and will try to start there from scratch - drop it again at TDC on compression stroke, advance a bit and maybe, maybe try to start again if I have time tomorrow or Monday morning.

Ok, it seems to be the carburetor is the issue. If the 1100 carb worked ok, try putting the 1100 carb on and get the engine running. Clear the engine out. You will need another oil change asap. When you get the engine running, immediately time it to 15 degrees BTDC and lock it in and leave it.

Contact Redline and explain that you did a gravity feed test and the engine still flooded. They need to help you with this one.

About the fuel pump:
The thing you get with an Authorized dealer is support. And it looks like there is no savings when buying from Amazon. So what am I missing?

For now, hold off on buying an electric pump until the carb issue has been taken care of.

That's the one I've ordered so far.
Glad your install went well Andrew!

You are right, there is no savings, but only fast shipping.
For me - I just wanted to have it for Monday morning, in case. But if I'm not gonna use it, then I would prefer to order it from autorized dealer.
