Holley Carb

Well here's my first post and my first problem. I have a 65 Ranchero straight six 200. The carb is a Holley 64-5192. The issue is inconsistent idle. The car will idle very fast at times. Even after I have been driving for 20 minutes or more. It will idle very high at a stop sign. If I pop the gas pedal it will slow it down but return to a high idle at the next stop. I'm thinking the automatic choke is defective. Any ideas? Thank you, Mike

I had this too, two posibilites... yeah both happened to me.

1) is the choke an auto choke? check to make sure your exhaust manifold isn't giving exhaust out the hot air tube for the choke, you would feel exhaust 'puffs' comming out of it, if so the hot exhaust gases might have melted the auto-choke.

2) the other possiblity is the butterfly valve shaft is wearing out, it's time to chuck the carb. had this on an 1100 pony carb, man was I upset but luckily sent it in and pony carbs fixed it.

disconnect the linkage, then with your hands, feel the motion of the throttle valve through it's entire range, see if it's 'wiggle's' in any undesired direction.

I would lean more towards the 2nd posibility, as it does sound like my previous problem...

Edit: One last thing it could be is the distributor is not tightened down, the bolt might be tight but the distributor could still be loose, check to see if your is. I would also check the vacuum canister on the distributor while your at it.

I think you have a little binding in the linkage . Try lubricating everything that you can . Also the return spring [I'd suggest two for safety] might have lost some of its' tension - try shortening it to tighten it up .

Thanks for the fast response to you all. I took the advice from all of you right into the garage yesterday. I started with the linkage, and used cleaner/degreaser on everything. Removed the auto choke and cleaned all parts. I found that the auto choke coil was not even attached properly. I cleaned the exterior of the carb, and tightened every nut, screw, & bolt I could see. I made sure that anything close to any moving parts of the linkage was moved and secured away form it. Reassembled the choke and this car idles perfect. As you can probably guess, I am NOT a mechanic with years of experience. I have not worked on a car/engine like this since I was 17 or 18 years old. I'm 52 and recently retired from Law enforcement. This is a blast working on this car. :thanks:
