hop up 200 6 cyl

Jim,

I know you like the boxtops, but if you check out foureyedpride, right now there is a guy that has a 1980 Futura for sale in Atlanta. It is a factory 200 6 cyl/4 speed, black exterior and tan interior. I've been collecting parts to try to put together this combo for a while now. I new there were a few Mustangs and Capris, but had never seen a Fairmont factory 6 cyl/4 speed combo. Price is decent at $2000. I have most of the parts now or I'd seriously consider that car. You should post some pics of your dragster.

Darrell

Darrell, I wish we were closer . I should be getting the car this week. I have 5 lug wheels and tires for it, just need the 5 lug axles and drums, or I could change over to the 8.8 I have in the box, 3.73, and 5 lug. that may be the way to go. it has poly bushings, and adj uppers plated lowers. I know its over kill but I have it. I am dismantling the box top.I think the 3.73 will really wake the 90 ponies up. dragster is painted , but I don't know how to post pics. will use a disposable camera to send some when i get it out side. thanks for the input.

Hi, I,finally starting my project which kinda sounds like yours. i have a 63 ranchero 170/2-speed that I'am trying to put a 79 fairmont 200/C4 in. I just got back the rebuilt C/4. I'am trying to figure out that what the heck is a carb,8604/1019 carb that has so many hoses and things sticking out of it that I wonder what to do with it. What's a dizzy? I kept the complete wiring harness ffrom the 79 before I junked the car. What,s H/W with adapter? After reading some of imfo that's out there I think the carb and wiring are the two hardest to understand. I'am amased at the stuff you guys know about six's. Really enjoy the imformation and comradery. Sometimes it gets a little to technical for me, but really like it. Not going to start till the Minnesota Back to the 50's is done after June 20th weekend, than it's grease time. Again that's for being out there. Bill

I did get the 80 fairmont, with factory 4 speed. it has a 3.08 gear. I drove this around for about 3 weeks. I then got off my duff and installed the holley/weber carb and adapter. I had a good carb, but what a difference. I have about 75 miles on this combo now and will probably put gas in on sat to ck the mileage. I also pulled the smog pump off and only have one vacume line going to the carb, vacume advance. the eng comp is clean and is starting to look nice. good luck with the project. you will think you are in a different car because of the 3 speed over the 2 speed.dizzzy is distruibtor.

It's always fun to start a new project like that. I sometimes think those of us who have had the same project for years and years get a little frustrated and bitter :)

my timing light has been out of town for 2 weeks, so I decided to go with my ear. Wow what a difference. I'll bet I moved the dist 1/2'' I moved it till it started running rough then backed off about 50/75 rpm. had to adj the idle way down .then the test. cranked back up fine still only luke warm, short drive lugged it down to 25 in 4th gear, no detonation, then back home. hot now and cranked with no kick back. there may be more. I have over 100 miles on the new combo, will put gas in tomorrow and find my around town mpg.It is way more peppy now.

Got the gas today. my base line was 17.6 around town, today when i filled it was almost the same driven mileage. When i figured the mileage it came to 18.2 .around .5 mpg, not enough to be conclusive. It is enough to make me glad I changed carbs. will keep mileage figures, for later.

the film machine at CVS ate my film, no pics. I put gas in yesterday, and after timing ,it is up from 17.6, 1st tank to 19.2 yesterday. not bad for a street driven 6 cyl. hooked up a manual oil press gauge 50lbs at speed, 45 at idle. that is with old oil. o/c today.thanks for all the interest. got to get some pics!!. :D

new gas mileage figures, not much improvement ,but getting close to 20. On fill up, i had 19.8. driving style or what ever. 20 mpg in the city is great. pics later.

Howdy Back Ford Nut:

Its possible that most of you mileage increase came from advancing the initial spark setting. Is that with the Holley/Weber? Have you fine tuned it any? What do your spark plugs look like.

To reach your goal of 20 MPG, have you-
*inflated your tires to there max PSI?
*replaced the old air filter with a new one?
*lightened the load?
*reduced your idle speed to the bare minimum?
*reset the choke to least cold start function?
*reset your low speed air screw to the highest vacuum/idle setting? Be sure to reduce your idle speed after.

You might also consider changing your oils to synthetics; engine, trans and rear end.

I started driving with a vacuum guage hooked up and visible. Just and idea.

Be sure to check your initial advance setting as soon as you get your timing light back- just to be safe and to have a base line.

Keep the info coming.

Adios, David

Keep the info coming. I have MT et drag tires on the back 30 lbs press 11.5 wide.Have a rectangle air filter, new. Don't carry any thing extra. Idle could be lower.I won't chg oils because,I like what I have.Low speed idle is adj. spark plugs look a lt tan, great.may pump up the tires a little. I have all of the parts to change to auto , just have to wait for cooler weather.

the weber was installed without changing the timing, then I changed timing just before I put gas in. there is absolute no detonation, I can slow down to about 18 mph in 3 rd gear and its smooth, pulling off.I'm going to take the power steering off, and that should net a .10 th mpg. never had a 6 cyl before.

I guess I am not meant to break 20, filled up again today, and it was 19.6. that good enough for me. for no more that was done to the car,and on the cheap, thats good.Could be I will pass that when I upgrade the exhaust. don't know the mileage on the road as i don't get there often. I did collaspe the rear bumper brackets to pull the bumper in about 2.5'' looks good. at present I am using oven cle :D aner on the ft bumper to take the anodizing off so i can polish it. will be collasping the ft bumper brackets also.

yahoo!!. the magic :D 20. got 20.4 this past week. no change in any thing. possibly fewer traffic lights. ft bumper is collasped and polished, looks good. lot of work.

It's alright - we in California are used to financially supporting the rest of the country :)
