There is something to be said for cast iron bolted to cast iron with a little extra here and there for good measure instead of shaved off to save weight.
I think of my 77 Cadillac manual where they were so proud of the 'new redesigned 425 motor that was over 100lbs lighter than the previous model (the 500)' They took a bunch of metal out of the valley area and instead of pushrod holes in the heads they were big slots. All that work to save 100lbs and they go and put wire wheel covers on that weigh 25lbs each!
