Okay, my car WILL NOT RUN and i do not know why...
I have replaced the coil, the distributor, the cap, the rotor, the plugs, the wires, AND the MSD 6A box!!!! All the car will do is blow high pressure gas out of the carb. If i was off on the timing wouldn't there be fire blowing out of the car instead of just air?? the engine only gargles and then blows air out of the carb. What is going on??
thanks for the help!

HELLO 66M..200

.....RECHECK THE DIST. YOU MIGHT BE FIRING A CYLINDER WITH THE INTAKE VALVE OPEN.... CAUSING THE HOT GASES TO COME OUT THE CARB. AND NOT THE MUFFLER. ...CROSSED WIRES WILL DO THE SAME.
OILY HANDS INSIDE THE DIST.CAP CAN CAUSE CROSS FIRING. SO RECHECKING AND CLEANING SHOULD FIND THE REASON FOR THE REVERSE FLOW OF THE GASES!!!

.....A STUCK INTAKE VALVE WILL ALSO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, ..BUT THAT WOULD MEAN THAT IT HAS JUST HAPPENED AND THAT IS UNLIKLY.

Is your timing set 180 degrees off, perhaps? A backfire isn't always smoke, fire, and flames. Sometimes it's just a big "chuff" back out of the carb.

A. Double check timing. Disconnect the coil and the MSD. pull the #1 plug and crank the engine until you hear pressure coning out of the spark plug hole. look for the TDC mark on the pulley. Line up the pulley with the timing mark. Now look at the rotor. It should be pointing directly at the left fender and lined up with the #1 plug wire. Make sure you have it in the proper firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 in a clockwise direction and that the wires are not crossed.

2. Check the MSD to make sure it's operating. Put the plug back in #1 and re-connect the ignition. Put a spare plug in the wire from the coil and lay it where it can contact ground. Crank the engine and look for spark. The MSD should crackle from the multiple sparks. CAREFUL! DO NOT TOUCH THIS PLUG WHEN THE ENGINE IS CRANKING UNLESS YOU ENJOY PAIN!

III. Look for big vacuum leaks. Disconnected PCV hose, missing gaskets, etc. The engine will not start and run with a big leak and will "chuff".

D. Still "chuffing" back thru the carb? Pull all the plugs and check compression.

What else have you done to the engine lately?

How was it running before you replaced all of the ignition system. I agree with the others it sounds way out of time, or you have a burnt or bent intake valve.

i was driving normally and it quit. I pulled over to the side of the road and fiddled with the dizzy and coil and it cranked back up. I then got about 2 miles down the road and it quit again. I found that if i fiddled with the dizzy it would sputter. So i replaced the dizzy and that didn't help. I then proceeded to replace the coil, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires. Still nothing. I set the dizzy with the valve cover off and turned over the crank until the intake valve closed and the exhaust began to open with the timing mark on TDC. I know this is correct. Is it possible the dizzy was bad from the manufacturer??
thanks

What switch are you using for the Dizzy? The body of the Ford switch must be grounded. Has the switch been checked?

Ric.

Sorry I just saw you replaced the MSD too... this was a post to check that out...

what do you mean the Ford pickup must be grounded? Do you mean the black wire running from the dizzy? because the other dizzy ran without using this wire as is shown in the wiring diagram

HELLO AGAIN 66M...200

.....FROM WHAT I HEARD IN YOUR LAST POST,....... I THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE A TIMING CHAIN, GEAR, OR SLOP IN THE CHAIN AREA.

.....WHEN THE TIMING CHAIN JUMPS IT WILL STILL RUN BY REAJUSTING THE DIST. BUT AFTER A WHILE IT JUST WON'T. LOOK FOR SOMETHING INSIDE THE MOTOR. BASIC TIMING MUST BE THE PROBLEM. FIRING THUR THE CARB AND WON'T START OR FIRE IS MORE MACHANICALLY A PROBLEM. YOUR CAM IS OFF FROM THE CHRANK.

..... I THINK WE ALL THOUGHT YOU JUST WANTED TO CHANGE OUT YOUR DIST. TO GET A BETTER RUNNING MOTOR. WHAT EVER WENT WRONG THE FIRST TIME IT STOPPED IS WHAT YOU WILL HAVE TO GO FOR!!!..........SORRY!!!! ..BAD NEWS HURTS.

i considered that as a possibility, but TDC is when the intake valve is closed, piston at the top, BUT the exhaust valve is SLIGHTLY open. Is this a natural thing or is this because the timing chain has slipped? In other words, at TDC the intake valve is closed and the exhaust is slightly open. Is this my problem?
thanks

8) it sound slike timing chain to me also. had a similar thing happen with my grand marquis.
