I have been shamed by this carburetor one time too many.

I give up, I am finished, out of ideas, patience, and my sanity. In the many months that I have had the Holley 2bbl carburetor installed, I have not concocted an accelerator linkage that pleases me. It seems that every other person that has done this upgrade has managed to use just ONE single piece of metal, and in most cases, use their original pushrod. In most of the applications I have seen from the members of this forum, the pushrod lines up with the carburetor throttle. My linkage is one inch closer to the engine. I have tried so many different setups but all have led to failure. I am so tired of this. I have been pondering a cable throttle. The problem is that I do not know much about it. Slade has a good page about his throttle cable installation here but it is not detailed enough for me. How does the cable attach to the pedal? I understand that the mounting points for the cable will vary depending on the carburetor, but must the mounting points be at a certain angle? Should I go this route and save myself some trouble, or will I be creating even more trouble?

Thanks,

Justin

I don't even bother with trying to use mechanical linkage. What has worked for me is to get the gas pedal assembly from a 89-94 Geo Metro (Yes I got that when I got the power brakes) Then buy a Lokar throttle cabel and their double return spring kit. You can always epoxy a stock gas pedal over the the Geo unit so it looks stock.

TheDude,
I just finished installing me Holley today using the Clifford Adapter. The trickest piece I found for helping me in the throttle linkage design was an adjustable link from NPD Part #9784-1. It comes with two of the hip joint type balls with a threaded end. It greatly simplified the linkage design and adjustments.

My linkage is all stock except for a piece of angle aluminum bolted to the carb's throttle and the adjustable link.

I hope this helps. People on this web site have sure helped me a lot.

What's confusing about mine?

I bought a 65 V-8 mustang gas pedal assembly. It has the pedal and the pull that you see in this picture:

I then bought the 36" Cable throttle kit from Summit (Lokar).

The only thing I had to get was some angle AL which you see here by the coil and some return springs:

By mounting it by the coil, it gives a straight pull for the cable and now I can put the cable almost anywhere. I had to trim the 36" cable down some, but it will give you enough to figure out how you want to run yours. Not being real familar with how the 2V orients, you should be able to mount a straight pull for the plate using the cable mounted to either the valve cover like mine, or the firewall, or the shocktower or the block. Can you give me a picture of how your carb is oriented?

Are you using a holley/weber or a 2300?? Do you have any pics of it?

I made my cable linkage with a 85 Stang gas pedal, 1978 or later I-6 valve cover and a 1980 F-150 throttle cable.

Works fine for me!

This picture is of the linkage setup that worked best for me but was still not acceptable:

This is how the carb sits now (this picture is before the elec. choke and new fuel line):

Slade, I was just not understanding how cable throttles worked. Luckily, my 65 Galaxie 'vert project has a cable throttle setup. I see how it works now. I actually removed the pedal and cable throttle to see if it would work in the Mustang. It does not but I managed to reinstall it correctly, so now I understand how cable throttles work.

I'm doing the same thing on my 66. I doubt my original accel pedal will work with Pacemaker headers.

Couple of questions on the picture below....
* Is the throttle pedal lever connection there? It must be black on black and hard to see.

* Also what does the big spring at the top do? I thought when you press on the accelerator pedal the top of this linkage goes towards the firewall? So why the spring.

Also do you rely on springs to pull the throttle back to idle position or just internal carb springs?

Any close ups of the connection at the carb?

Thanks,
Steve-O

Thats at the carb. I'll need to look on my computer for a better picture later.

That's just the lever.

You are right that it pulls to the firewall. I found with the cable throttle that I needed some return tension to pull the pedal back in place, otherwise there was slop in the gas pedal. It is an extremely low tension spring, just enough to pull the pedal in the inside of the car, back to the lock position so it wouldn't float. What was happening with that set up was the pedal would sometimes float putting slack in the cable between the rod and the first connection at the coil. That would delay the accelerator action. That spring basically just keeps the pedal tight against the cable so there is no slop in the throttle at all. I do not use it to return the carb to idle. I'll try to take some pictures sometime this week when I move the 99 mustang out of the garage for a few hours.
